Probably a common question, is Illic worth it? I intend to run him in a unit of pathfinders (say 6?), so I'm wondering if it's worth it. Also considering chucking a Sniper Farseer in the unit for guide, if that's also a factor.

That's actually what happened, Horus is secretly a Tervigon.

I find Illic to be quite the annoyance in my games against him. His instant death ability makes him an actually dangerous character assassin with some luck. Pathfinders are also something I've learned to be unfond of as they remove units of importance with casual ease. The sniper farseer is also an irritating foe to face due to their absurd range and capacity to instant death T3 models while ignoring the armor saves of most units in the game.
While perhaps not as good as the seerstar, few units are as annoying as Illic, and while I'd still rate Illic below a Vindicaire for sheer versatility on his own, he's certainly someone I don't particularly enjoy facing, and his real strength is how he boosts rangers. Give him a few tries to piss people off.
As for guide though...I'm less sure about that. Illic is already all but twinlinked and pathfinders are already extremely accurate.

140 points, fires 5 shots in the game. Hits with all most likely, wounds with 2 or 3.
Then the enemy rolls for his armor unless you roll a six to wound.
Barely worth it.

I think he is referring to the Seer Sniper, not Illic.
|
If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM! |

Illic is not worth it, and neither is pathfinders, or a sniping farseer.

Here is my experience with Illic. Do not see him as an asset in itself. He is a support character, a force multiplier but not a main unit.
Given the ease of ignore cover weapons these days I say that Pathfinders are a waste of points. Stick to Rangers if you want to to use some.
Illic's best use is behind an Aegis Line with a Squad of Dark Reapers. Huh?
Yes. The Dark Reapers have 3+ which is more than Illic has. The Aegis will give the Reapers a 4+ cover increased to a 2+ via Illic's Shrouding. Illic can split fire from the rest of the squad so he is not 'locked' by the Reaper's target. Put the Exarch with Fast shot on the Lascannon. Plus Illic will get to ignore jinx because there are models with Reaper Rangefinder in his squad.
That is a much better investment than sticking him in a bush with some Pathfinders.

I really like Illic. Personally I like to run him with a unit of artillery. Make him toughness 7 and gives the artillery shrouding. If you like the points investment you can throw him with d-cannons and have them in range from the first turn with infiltrate.
Also the inability of Los from both the pathfinders and Illic makes for great model specific removal.

I think illic makes up in coolness what he lacks in his lame abilities and shooting.
Take illic in a unit of 10 walking WG with cannons or scythes, take a spiritseer with VoT, and now its decent and has illic in it.

He may be useful against armies that have low armour and toughness so can snipe 5 important targets by sound of him.
But end of day goes to personal taste, some people make models that are bad in matches work into professionals against others lol

I agree with the rest of what you're saying though.
The idea of infiltrating D-Cannons sounds pretty cool, might try them out this weekend at my FLGS.
