It's the perpetual question every parent mutters sometime or another: What can we do with the kids that will be fun for everyone?
The answer may lie with a new game store in Lynnwood.
Round The Table Game Pub offers old and new board games along with brews, ice cream and other treats to attract families to spend quality time together.
The business is the collaboration of Tim Morgan, 44, and Nick Coelho, 26.
“What better way to improve a game store than to have beer,” Coelho said. “But keep it family.”
Coelho moved to the Pacific Northwest six years ago from Arkansas and worked at Chuck's Hop Shop in Seattle getting to know local brews and learning about the beer business.
He met Morgan, who had worked at Gary's Games and Hobbies in Seattle for 23 years and who was ready for change.
The men opened Round The Table Game Pub on Feb. 14.
The grand opening event saw more than 200 people come through the doors to play cards, puzzles and games such as chess and Risk. Single people, couples and families can sit down and play popular games including Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan and Pandemic. There is a family puzzle area, an open play area and on Wednesdays the business hosts Dungeons & Dragons sessions.
“Geeks and gamers are normal people,” Coelho said. “They have kids now.”
Parents can relax with a local brew, which for now is served in 12 ounce bottles. Coelho hopes to soon serve beer on tap along with a local root beer. There will be beer tastings, too, Coelho said.
Meanwhile, kids and adults can both partake in Seattle's Full Tilt ice cream whose many flavors include: salted caramel, lavender, peanut butter and jelly, and chocolate pumpkin.
Morgan said opening Round The Table Game Pub was a big step.
“It was incredibly nerve-wracking,” Morgan said. “Not the partnership. We trust each other fully.”
Morgan would like the business to help get people away from their computers, get them in a more social environment to play games together.
Traditional games such as Sorry, Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit have been around for years, but there is a lot more to explore in the world of games in 2014. Morgan wants to get that message out there.
The business also buys and sells used games.
Round The Table Game Pub is an affordable time out for families and others who want to have a good time together, learn new games while kids have a sweet treat and parents relax with a beer.

Fair play to him.

One of the pleasures of a visit to Warhammer World is indulging in a pint or seven whilst playing.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

One of our local pubs have a big pile of board games, but they're no mention of it in their blurb.
It's not a normal pub in other ways too, though.

Only in a civilized country could this happen.

We have a poor attitude towards drinking civilly.

What a wonderful idea... me and the missus are off to Canada to see some friends in September and I feel a detour is in order to show my support for such an endeavor. Washington state is right next door innit?

I shall pay them a visit while wearing my favorite shirt and see if anyone complains when I start mercilessly cheating.

There's actually several of these in the Seattle-area:

Card Kingdom in Ballard has an attached bar/cafe.

The AFK Tavern in Everett hosts wargaming and role-playing groups. I've not made the treck up.

If only I could drag my 50 year old dad away from his Ipad long enough for a game of LOTR SBG, Warhammer 40K or SAGA...
