Subject: What Legion army should I start?

Sinister Chaos Marine

I like the whole idea of Legion vs Legion, and I cant choose an army to play as (it's hard, they're all very similar armies unlike 40k where the only real crossover is some imperial units!). I wanted a change from the Chaos space marines I normally play as, which is mainly Tzeentch or Nugle (with a bit of Slaanesh sometimes), and I really can't choose a good Legion. I'm not too bothered about winning, just playing for fun, but I guess I don't wanna buy a load of wallet emptying forge world models just to watch them get laughably destroyed on turn 1. So what do you think I should take?

I really should make a flow chart infograph for this.
Question: what playstyle do you prefer? Are you a tread head? Footslogger? Death from above? Etc? Etc? Each legion has a speciality or two that really sets them apart from their colleges in other legions.
I personally chose Death Guard because I've been disposed to attrition warfare in strategy games since I was 7 years old. I also like using NBC weapons against my enemies. It was a good fit.

Well. I'm a pretty big fan of fielding stupid amounts of vehicles, things like bikes and flyers are always a cool go-to in my eyes. Tanks are alright for the sheer amount of dakka you can dish out with some tanks, but I like tanks as transports best at the moment. I like to try and spread that heavy firepower among my infantry guys, in small squads all piled into rhinos just to drive them right next to enemy and then fill them with bulletholes. Close combats' kind of always been a last ditch thing for me, as I've never been able to see the advantage of running screaming with a massive axe towards the enemy (fear factor I guess, but looking down the barrel of an autocannon's probably going to have a similar effect in my opinion). So yeah, vehicles, a mobilized infantry and only really desperate CC is how I like playing.

The thing about the Legions is that they all use the same core list. Then, each Legion gets a special rule or two (and sometimes a disadvantage) that applies to the army to help make them more unique. Finally, every Legion gets 2-3 special units, a Primarch, and some special characters. So, yes, while the Legions do have their specialties, they still largely function in a similar way, just with a penchant for a certain aspect of warfare. What it may come down to most is which Legion do you actually like? After all, it's not just rules, but also fluff and appearance. For example, I love the Salamanders fluff, I like their rules, but I cannot stand the drake skin bling on all the models (which are otherwise amazing models), so no Salamanders for me. I chose Emperor's Children. Loyalist, to be specific. They have some advantages in speed and assault. Both of their special units are dedicated to assault. I love the look of the models. I love the idea that they're all noble champions of perfection, teetering on the edge of a prideful fall, and even when the Heresy started, a lot of them still remained loyal (almost a full third, I think). So, find the Legion that matches your playstyle, but also one that you can be personally invested in because you also like the Legion itself. Given the things you mentioned you like, you may want to wait for the White Scars or Dark Angels to come out (since you like bikes, and I'm assuming the Ravenwing existed in 30K, too). Also, small squads are not really a "thing" in the Legion list. The points are set up to make you want to maximize your squads. You pay a larger upfront cost for half of a full squad, but every additional marine added costs less per model.

I chose iron warriors first because i love siege, mobile long range fighting. Defiler was king! Shoot battle cannon 72" and move 6" n charge 12"!
6th Ed hit deffy in the face with a nerf bat very hard n replace him with fiends.
I idiotically decided to make w Chosen army n failed.

Take 3 contemptors and 2 legion whirlwinds (the one with the str8 ap3 rocket barrage), and fill the rest of the list with fluffy troop spreads.
Or get an HQ in cataphracti armor and attatch him to a unit of heavy weapon specialists with 7 lazcannons and interceptor.

Its more or less what you want your army to look like and what you want to paint. I have about 8k of Night Lords. I can field large armies of almost all the available RoWs or just the general list, although I mostly use Terror Assault and Orbital Assault and fill in any holes with a secondary primary detachment led by a Master of Signal Consul just to field my heavy slots.
You have literally any kind of army type available, drop pod assault, horde marines, armored fist, jump pack and aircraft assault, gun line, and so on.
You have the support to back them up with specialized consuls like the twin plasma pistol packing Moritat, jump pack captain stat apothacaries, and quite a few others. Plus you have even more foot slogging apothecaries 3 for one in the elites section which can carry the augury scanner for a few points. Attach him to a squad and now you have intercept and feel no pain.
Land Raiders, yeah we get them in squadrons. Medusa, we get them in a squadron too with marine BS. Like Storm Eagles? Theres a ROW that allows them as dedicated transports for any squad that normally gets a Rhino. Plus we get big boys like the nigh indestructible Spartan with its quad lascannon sponsons, armored ceramite and a Flare Shield.
Narrow down what you are looking for. Like they said above, each legion also has its own perks and negatives. My Night Lords like to gang up on people and fight dirty, if I outnumber my opponent I get +1 to wound in close combat. My negative is the cult of personality of my warlord, if he dies then every Legion unit in the army rolls leadership or runs.

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM! |

Hm, after pondering about it I think I'm going with Word-Bearers. I'm going to get so many of those awesome Jetbikes, because I want a damned imperial Jetbike and DA can jog on. Those Gal Vorbak that are apparently coming out soon look unimaginably stabby and if the books are anything to go off then they'll actually be alright possessed marines. Perhaps I'll load up on Land raiders just to slam them straight into the enemies HQ just for a giggle. Thanks for all your input!

Don't do it, set the babble (sorry bible) down and go Hydra (alpha legion).
