Hello all you dakkanaughts!
Well lets dig right into it. Im looking at starting either or faction Warmachine or Hordes. Now I dont really under stand the difference in Fury vs focus. that being said Im not to worried about that right now or should I be? In any case its hard to just pick 1 but i suppose it has to be done.
So a few of my warhammer tactics has always been a hit and run type approach or a get up in your face and beat face and be able to take hits.
Im still looking through armies and battlecollege has been pretty good. As it stands what are some good armies out there that fit that criteria?
a sample list of units and such that I've liked.
I really liked Karchev from Khador,
I like the trollbloods, Legion of everblight, Menoth
I guess it breaks down into 2 armies of each faction. To many choices. This being more on the competitive side of things I suppose im looking for the most competitive out of the list?
I have must have in each armies due to me liking the model. What do you guys suggest? this is an overly complicated post I know. Im just looking for some insight and how to over all build the army that suits my style.
Thanks for looking and posting!

All factions are competitive, what is competitive in them varies. These are what you can expect out of each of those choices.
Khador: This faction is 100% about small based infantry, with a little side of cavalry here and there. Focuses on hitting hard and being hard to hit.
Trollbloods: This factions strikes a balance between beasts and infantry. Focuses on buffs, synergy and defensive bonuses.
Legion of Everblight. This faction focuses mostly on beasts. Focuses on specialized tools, powerful special abilities, flexible movement and ignoring terrain.
Protectorate of Menoth: This faction strikes a balance between 'Jacks and Infantry - though 'Jacks often do they heavy lifting. Focuses on denial, anti-magic and buffs.

Well lets break it down like this. By warcasters that i pretty much like and will get with the given army.
Legion of Everblight: Thagrosh the Messiah 2
Khador: Karchev, The Butcher( the original one)
Menoth: elite Kreoss
Trollbloods: Gun Bjorn,
Madrak Ironhide, World Ender 2.
Those are the break downs of the casters I would use.

Legion of Everblight: Thagrosh the Messiah 2
He's a solid second-tier caster. Fairly versatile, can run any solid mix of beasts. Has one very silly list that relies on tons of shredders. A solid all-around choice.
Khador: Karchev, The Butcher( the original one)
Butcher is good. Karchev is a gimmick. Khador 'Jacks are largely a joke (i warn you of this because you like Karchev)
Menoth: elite Kreoss
All the Kreosses are good. He has two epic forms, on a horse and not on a horse. His not-on-a-horse epic form is good, but a tad narrow. He relies on infantry spam and so is a bit off an odd duck. On-a-horse epic kreoss is very versatile and fun.
Trollbloods: Gun Bjorn,
Madrak Ironhide, World Ender 2.
eMadrak is brutal, one of the most powerful Warlocks in the game. Gunn Bjorn is poo king of the poo palace in the poo kingom, that's three kinds of poo. He's seriously bad.

Well I'm not sure it's what I'd start someone on but I've certainly seen worse starts if you don't want to start with the basic sets. Keep in mind while eMadrak is powerful he's got some odd abilities that may be hard for a new player to manage right away.

Get a dire troll kit and magnetize the options and get an earthborn dire troll. That is a good start since you don't like the light beasts. Fenblades are good as are trollkin champions and maybe get jenessa stonetide for your solo. That should be a solid start to get to playing for your trolls. For Legion and Thagrosh you basically want lots of beasts and then 2 different solos (the forsaken and a shepard). I can't give much advice on the other factions.

Still kind of at a loss on what to grab for a simple 15/25 point list.
Brother Janus those champions look awesome.
So how about something like this for a 15 point list
Mardrak2+5
Warbeast: Bomber 10(5)
Units: Full unit of Champions-10
Which is a total of 15pts
to make it 25 add the Fennblades and UA.
Sound like a good plan? I rather not waste money. hehehe

I'd do Fennblades before champs, and something like Warders over champs. eMadrak likes units with reach since they sink up so well with his feat. Champs are really more Borka or Grissel's thing, I think. I'd probably swamp out the bomber for something like a Pyre Trolls so you can get in the Krielston Bearers as they're really the lifeblood of the Trollbloods. That said small games are small games, they are always a bit wonky.
Noting you've listed here could be considered a waste of money - it'd see use, even if with another caster mostly.

A shame, since those 2 light warbeasts are what helps turn other Warbeasts on so to speak.
Specifically, their Animi are what you bring them for. Rush helps you deliver heavy beasts to their target by speeding them up.
Farstrike helps the Bomber and his rather pathetic range on an otherwise awesome shooting attack.
And they are no slouch themselves. The Axer has Reach and Thresher, a deadly combo. And the Impaler has a boostable ranged attack with crit slam.

I would hesitate to run only 1 warbeast in a hordes list. If you don't have warbeasts you don't have fury to cast spells and that usually means you are done. At minimum I would have 1 heavy and 1 light beast at all point levels unless your caster has a special reason they can run beast light.

Yup, its generally a poor idea to run with less than 3 beasts unless your list is basically using 1-2 beasts to just fuel the warlock and not risk themselves in battle. And then it needs to be a specific build for that style.
That list is also illegal as the UA for Fennblades is FA1, so you can only have one of them.

This is for Mardrak2 the epic version.
" tier 2"
Requirements: The Army includes two Trollkin fennblade units
benefits: add a unit attachment to one trollkin fennblade unit free of cost this attachment ignores FA restrictions.
Page 28 in the Trollbloods book.
but yeah I dont know what this whole fury, amini or whatever is. going to read over the rule book at some point tonight.

Yes, do that before you settle on a buy list. you will find that Hordes wants more beasts and less infantry and Warmachine wants fewer warjacks and more infantry for best results.
There are always exceptions to this statement, but it is a good general expectation to have when looking at the factions.

What I have found with the Warmahordes game is that it takes some play time to figure out just what clicks with you. You may love the look of a certain caster but how they play just doesn't ever work for you. That's how I was with my giant Cygnar army I bought during Mark 1. Loved the models, hated how they played. Start small, learn the casters you have and if you like them, expand. $150 should get you plenty to play with without going overboard.
That list is fine, but I would get a second caster as well. Is there another troll warlock you like?
Ecit: Duh, you got the trollblood battlebox. Second caster!

Missed that it was eMadrak.
Anyway, I strongly advise against starting with a theme list. you'll end up spending money on things you'll only use with that list, when the strength of this game is the variety of list building options.
What I would purchase as a starting Troll player wanting to play eMadrak,
Madrak
2 Dire Troll heavy kits(to magnetize)
Axer light beast
Fenblades+UA
Kriel Warriors+UA
Warders
Krielstone Bearer and Stone Scribes
This plays to his strengths and spells/feat while also being general enough that you will have overlap with later lists.

I was given advice on the PP forums on a eMadrak list and it looks pretty simple and easy to follow. a straight beat em up type.
Warlock: eMadrak+5
Warbeast: Mulg-12(7)
Units:Fennblades+UA-10
Units: min krielStone scribe+elder-4
Solos: 2x Fennblade Kithkar-4
total of 25 points
the other list consisted of pyre troll and slag troll I think
But I think I like this list posted and will try it with a proxy army.

Having one warbeast sounds like a pretty bad idea at 25pts. Mulg is a tank but eMadrak doesnt have a huge amount of support for him and he wont be able to keep madrak topped off on fury all the time without running him hot all the time. Plus, if you lose Mulg, madrak will be dead in the water. I would be interested in seeing how effective a swamp troll would be. Warpath would give you 3" of movement, then the swamp troll could more 5", tongue drag an enemy solo/UA 8" into range of your army. So, 16" threat to drag an enemy model to their doom, plus his animus gives madrak a defense boost.

71 pts khador - 6 war casters
41 pts merc highborn - 3 warcasters |
