Subject: Wave Serpents in Eldar lists - jink buff/nerf - still auto include?

6th edition - 5+ jink, 4+ with HF, full ballistic skill firing.
7th edition - jink save is one better, but at the expense of snap shot firing - and the decision to jink or not comes before you know how badly it might hurt.
What do you think - how far down does this knock the mighty wave serpent? Will we still be seeing them in tournament lists?

They are still powerful cheese, especially when spammed.
You only have to jink with the ones being shot at which are even harder to kill.
They are apparently now counted as Troops when selected as DT for Troops.

It's the ONLY dedicated transport. It's not as if we have huge choices here.
I don't spam Wave Serpents but usually have 2 in my list at any given time.

It's still a no brainer however it opens up the possibility of a unit with deepstrike popping in behind an unjinked serpent and annihilating it. Which makes armies with strong DS A-T units an issue.

You choose to jink during the enemies shooting phase.

Very difficult to say for tourney play. I will be playing a couple today to test them out in various games.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby. |

Well, I played Serpents from the 3rd edition on.
Now they got their functionality back as being the safest transport in the game. Its no longer a reliable gunboat and it never has been except in the 6th ed in conjunction with new codex.
Serpent spam is no longer a nobrainer. Its again an army for a skilled player. I like this changes since I've shelved my Eldar after two RTTs with the new codex. They were simply too powerful.

Really? I'd say it is still a no-brainer, as they have actually not lost anything in terms of power. Sure you lost jink all the time, but there is still plenty of cover on the board for your holofields to still take effect behind.
The fact your serpents themselves now will be scoring (and troop scoring at that) makes them infinitely more powerful. A scoring unit with a 30 inch move has so much potential.
Also vehicles are more durable now vs penetrating hits. Not the biggest buff for serpents due to their shield, however still something that might come into play.

Screaming Shining Spear

I played my first game of 7th last night night and I actually think my serpents were even better. At 1500 points, I an a battleforged list with a Mantleseer, Spiritseer, Wraithguard x2 in Waveserpents, Warp Spiders x2, and a Suncannon Wraithknight. I rolled on Telepathy, hoping to try out the new Invisibility, but I failed to get the power. However, I did get Shrouding which turned out to be a very effective combo with the serpents. As long as I kept them within 6" of the Mantleseer, they had a 2+ Jink in the open, or a 2+ cover save (with holofields) behind ANY terrain or intervening models! Thats pretty great if you ask me. As for the snap shooting, If I am forced to Jink with a Serpent, I just use it to Shoot flyers on the following turn, and as they are my main source of AA anyway, no loss there. If no enemy flyers are on the board, I just flat out to gain some better positioning for my troops.
For my playstyle, its a buff for sure.

Wave Serpents are way more survivable now, my advice is to go behind cover so you don't have to jink.

You mean last turn objective grabbing if its last turn. But Serpents are still very vulnerable in cc.
