So, while coloring with my daughter, I had an idea. What if you could just color models with markers. They can be fine tipped, so detailing would be easier, clean up and set up would be easier..... So I'm going to try it out. I have not done it yet, but wanted to post it here for feedback and ideas. My thought is prime the model white, then start from light colors to dark colors, then when finished do a black wash.

Any thoughts? Once I try I'll post pics

It will certainly provide very thin layers, I think marker provide a very limited source of colours and will probably cause a lot of streaking due to the drying time... But I would be very interested to see how it turns out, as I have not tried it.

Look forward to seeing some results!

Use good qauilyty artist ones. Expensive but they are a while different class on quality

Strong colours. And lots of variety in shades

I have tried painting with colored Sharpies before! Wish I still had those minis around to post a pic. Overall, it wasn't too terrible, but the layers were quite thin, and they were thick markers which made detail very difficult. I would assume with some nice artist markers they wouldn't be all that bad. Just apply a matte varnish at the end to help lock in the marker, as well as reduce the sheen that may have been left behind.

It's all in the rolls.

Yeah. Good artist markers often have a brush, and flat chisil end with sharp well refunded corners for precision.

Thanks for the input. I've heard copic marks may be good for this as well

I've used black fine-line markers to fill in details on minis - belts, harness straps, hazard stripes over a yellow basecoat, caps between fingers, that sort of thing - and I'm quite happy with them.

I've used them to cover overpaint when doing the trim on Space Marine shoulderpads as well. They're a useful tool for the paintbox.

I grabbed some posca paint pens to do lettering, they seem OK for that, I can't imagine only using markers though

Experimentation is the first step towards innovation. I'll be subbing this thread to see what comes of it!

I notice my posts seem to bring threads to a screeching halt. Considering the content of most threads on dakka, you're welcome.

I tried them for faking the WWII Russian tank lettering and it didn't work for me. Thought it would be a good idea though.

Now a silver or gold sharpie on the other hand might not be bad.
