Victrix have a range of Napoleonic troopers, really good prices [60 for about £25]

Perry also do some plastics and metals from the time period. They look great.

For Napoleonics, Perry and Victrix are probably your best bet as mentioned already.
Perry's range is more extensive, and has more factions such as the Confederation of the Rhine, however Victrix's plastics are cheaper, for example Perry's french infantry are £20 for 42 models, whereas Victrix are £22.95 for 60.

I'd also say Perry have the edge in quality but judge for yourself:

Spoiler:

For the Civil War, Perry have also got you covered, they've got a pretty solid range of plastics as well as a bunch of metals to flesh out the range.

For Dark Ages, there's Gripping Beast's plastics which includes Vikings and Saxons as well as generic warriors, there's also Conquest who make Normans. For other armies such as the Rus or Byzantines, Gripping Beast also have metal ranges for use with SAGA.

As for the 17th century, it rather depends on which wars you're interested in, the most popular are probably the English Civil War and the Thirty Year's War, both of which have plastics from Warlord for their Pike and Shotte game system.

Perry is value for money in my opinion and I have a US civil war, afrika korps force...my favourite model maker is renegade miniatures based out of Devon. I love their miniatures but they are on hiatus and im praying they come back...excellent napoleonics and earlier era's.....I was pleasantly Suprised by the assault group (bit out of era) recently.

Renegade or perry. And perry plastics are cost effective.

And do be afraid of metals for historicals. The prices are still excellent. They don't cost the $5+ that metal fantasy or sci-fi miniatures often cast. Perry's metals are great and should definitely be considered to bolster the plastics.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.
