Subject: How do I use quick shade?

I bought a little bottle of army painter quickshade light tone today but I am not sure when to apply it. Is this the last step after all painting and details have been done, or does it go on before then?

Prime>base coat>quickshade>highlight (if you wish). Check out the gallery on their website, lots of good examples http://www.thearmypainter.com/ . While i believe the gallery represents quickshade, its not the quickshade inks (those in the little bottles), but its bigger brother that comes in a large tin. Good luck.

Light tone is almost a waste. Strong tone is where it's at.

I suggest to go for gw washes, they are more practical to use, you can mix them, you have greater control with the brush and you can and obtain great results. They're also matt

The OP is talking about the small bottles of quickshade, not the tins. The bottles have all the advantages you ascribe to the GW ones, plus have the added advantage on not looking terrible once on the model. You'd have to pay me to allow Nuln Oil etc to touch my models, terrible stuff.
Oh, and Army Painter stuff is cheaper and you get more in a bottle.
Oh, and you're safe from GW suddenly deciding they're giong to relaunch their range again and leave you unable to buy matching pots.
OP, you can experiment with how you apply paints and washes to achieve the desired effect. The main variations are to do highlighting before or after a wash layer, but there's no reason you can't do both (or neither if you're lazy). In fact, I know of one person who undercoats white, then applies a black wash before starting to do base colours, this gives him bright, vibrant colours on the raised areas, but he doesn't have to worry too much about the corners as it's already fading to black.

Oh sorry, I didn't know about these new products. Why do you think gw washes look terrible on the model?

The Army painter recommends the quickshade to be applied after base colours and before the figure is varnished and finished , no highlighting or other types of shading. But I would use quickshade after I have done the highlighting and shading I want, since the quickshade is tough and hard to paint over.

Well it's all subjective, but the first time I tried Nuln Oil (after using Badab Black for years) I ended up stripping everything as it looked so awful.
On the other hand, Nuln Oil flows well into basing sand, so I keep a pot around for that. I'd never let it touch a model though.

Also, as a side note. You can get the army painter ink wash set, as i recently have which makes them even cheaper again. Along with larger sizes etc etc etc

They recommend it because that's how they do it, so if you follow their recommendations your stuff will look a bit like theirs and you won't feel like they've sold you something that doesn't do the advertised job.
There aren't hard and fast rules to this stuff, it's about finding a method that achieves a result that looks good to you.

Thank you for all the advice! I think the store also had strong tone and ill try that too. If I were to try GW brand, what would i be looking for? They don't carry P3 brand there so I cant try that yet.
