Subject: Paint scheme for modular sci-fi terrain

I recently purchased a large amount of modular sci-fi terrain, and have been stumped as to how I should paint it. So I was hoping the wonderful people on dakka could help me out with suggestions on what to do and what not to do. The terrain will typically be used for 40k games, but I was hoping to give it a paint scheme that would let it also fit in with more steampunk games like malifaux and warmachine as well. I was considering going with a dark and subdued color scheme with brighter accents, but I was unsure how that would turn out in terrain. Links to particularly useful tutorials would be greatly appreciated, along with what types and brands of paint I should use.
Thank you for reading, and may your dice roll well

Everything I say, barring quotes and researched information, is my personal opinion. Not fact.

I'd say a light grey, then give is a wash to give it contrast and rust or a dark silver in some spots to give it an aged or neglected look.

Grey, either metallic or non-metallic seems like the most practical colour.

In the grim future, there is only... grey...... and sometimes rust. But seriously, yeah, I would go grey (as others have recommended). Its easy and looks nice. Metallic gangways and details. If you want to add a dash of color, black and yellow hazard stripes, yellow 'loading bay' signs etc. Not unlike the picture displaying the terrain. I guess they are trying to sell it to you and therefore have done their research on what looks good. Also, for small details, you could print out a sheet of propaganda posters (there are a few floating around the net). Have one or two pasted here and there, perhaps a few blowing across the floor where they have been dropped (curled and stuck in place obviously ). Small details like this give the terrain personality imho and makes it a little more unique, this however will theme it 40k. Unless you can create the more generic propaganda (or other) posters in a photo editor yourself. I dunno, just trying to spitball and you give you some ideas. Good luck and keep us posted xD

Its not the most 40k thing ever.
If its ment to be metal it will probably be some flavor of base color used on that planet. like green for cadins.
If its meant to be some kinda stone building. it will probably be some shade of grey.
Hazard strips and random metalics should be added. as well plently of chipping and rust.

I'd say grey with copper/brass metal. Will give you a bit of steampunk feel, but still use-able in non-steampunk settings.

1400 points of EW/MW Italians (FoW)
2200 points of SoB and Inquisition (40K)
1000 points of orks (40K)
Just starting out with Ultramarines (30K)
Four 1000-2500 point forces for WHFB (RIP)

Wonderful, thank you all for the advice. So it looks like I am going to be priming them in grey, any reccomendations on what type/brand of primer I should use?
