I know there have been other topics on this, but I wanted to summarize and confirm.

First, some facts from the rule book:

- You can take as many Combined Arms detachments as you want.
- There is nothing preventing you from taking Combined Arms detachments from any number of factions, as long as you don't mix factions within the same detachment. Therefore, there is no need for allied detachments unless you really can't handle having to take two troop choices instead of one.
- supplements are counted being from the same faction as their parent codex.

Following on from this, here is an example of a list I would consider perfectly legal (if not very playable thanks to Come the Apocalypse rules):

Combined Arms Detachment 1:
Codex Space Marines, with some units sprinkled in from Clan Raukaan and Sentinels of Terra.

Combined Arms Detachment 2:
Codex Chaos Space Marines, Crimson Slaughter and Black Legion

Combined Arms Detachment 3:
Tyranids

What do you think, and what would you say is the difference between current RAW And actual RAI? Have I missed anything?

I don't know about the others but Farsight mentions you can only use options from one supplement when choosing an army.

idk about RAI but the RAW appear to imply that you are correct: we can take as many Combined Arms and/or Allied detachments (or neither in the case of Inquisition, etc.). What I don't understand is that the only real command benefit we get is that an unbound army cannot deny a battle forged army, and rerolling out warlord trait. I thought that there would be more information in the new book that detailed these changes.

how about dataslates? how are dataslates considered with the CA and allies? I'm asking in reference to the storm wing dataslate as it relates to dark angels.

Dark angels 70/100 of deathwing, 50/100 ravenwing, 80-100 3rd company
IG +6k pts
and a sampling of different armies
warmachine, 40-50 points of:

A formation (as defined on a dataslate) is an alternative type of detachment.
