Storm Guard

Northampton, England

I have just finished competing in my first Steamroller tournament, it took place over several weeks and had a World Cup style with two groups of four then semis and finals knockout stages. It was 50 points with times turns.

It was a one list minimum, or a second list with no character restrictions.

I took eHaley, Stormwall, Squire, max Precursors w/UA, max ATGM w/U, Black 13th, Journeyman, Harlen, Rhupert, Gorman and Eiryss.

First Round | Game One
Spoiler:
I took on one of the clubs co-hosts who takes what is usually a pretty mean Menoth list at 35 points, however he tried to streamline it at 50 and it lost effectiveness. It was a pSevvy list with 2 max Bastions, 2 Reckoners, Avatar, max Choir and max Errants w/UA. We played Scenario 10.

This game was all about the deployment, unfortunately my opponent deployed his Bastions far from the drama on his right side, behind a wall and near a forest, he also played with Sevvy preparing spells against those horrid Precursors, obviously not an option, his left flank was his two reckoners going toe to fist with my Stormwall, this did not end well.

One of the unfortunate things was, there was some rough terrain inbetween the two zones, this just hindered most of my opponents movement with Eiryss owning it and Rhupert able to sing pathfinder, I controlled and dominated my left zone from turn two while the Precursors shut up shop against his Bastions and Avatar on the right, his Errants went down to Mage Storm mostly and it was all she wrote.

I really worried about this game but came out feeling positive.

First Round | Game Two
Spoiler:
My next game was against the nicest dude you will ever meet. I love playing against Mike as the games are always so fun. He was playing his Cryx with pSkarre and A LOT of models. Including a lot I hadn't played against before. Deathjack was in there as well as min Bane Knights, max Bane Thralls, Mechanithralls, Bile Thralls, Ghost Raiders, Stitch Thralls, Pistol Wraith, Skarlock and Tartarus.

As I said... A lot of models. We played scenario 9, everybodies favourite and off we go.

Mike chose me to go first, people seem to forget eHaleys feat when they do this, I ran my Precursors and B13 up towards the left most flag, moved all my Gun Mages to a hill in between the right and the middle and the wall and the rest went straight up the centre.

Mike moved his Ghosts far left of him, these will do nothing for the rest of the game, Bane Knights spread out towards his right and everything else meandered up the middle, more towards his left. Which meant his left (my right) flag went of course.

Stormwall positioned itself infront of the middle flag, also meanining it was in melee with DJ, there was no more DJ, here I had to decide what to do with the Bane Knights, I knew they could and would likely hurt. However, between Eiryss, Harlen and the B13 I managed to get all 6 off the board and put a few boxes on Tartarus, the Precursors shield walled up in between the two flags and the ATGM picked off a few mechanithralls, Haley popped feat and got everything except the ghosts.

Now, as I said, I hadn't played against many of these things before and I was well on the way to board control, basically under eHaleys feat, everything got to move up, I got 1CP at this point, due to some bunching up, the B13th, Eiryss, Stormwall and Gun Mages managed to take out all the Mechanithralls and Bane Thralls, and one or two stiches, somewhere around here the Pistol Wraith also went.

I'd picked up 3 CPs by now, it was well and truly over, so I learnt what Bile Thralls could do, take out nearly my entire Precursors and Gun Mages under Skarres feat! They were brutal, even laid a few points on eHaley which scared me a little.

Tartarus threshered the B13th and Eiryss but both flags were mine and there was no mobility to really stop that.

This was a great fun game with so much banter, I'm fairly sure it would've been a lot different if Mike went first.

So at this point, I'm already through, my first and second opponent had played their third game that evening, and my second opponent had lost too my third and won the late game, so I am positive as this next one was the one I was dreading...

First Round | Game Three
Spoiler:
So this is the game I wasn't looking forward too, Dave is a very very experienced tournament player who runs his Khador seamlessly, one of those guys who knows everything about every army. So, very very good.

I've only played Dave twice and both times beat him on a fluke, I know it wouldn't be the case this time. He ran pButcher list with Spriggan, Winter Guard deathstar, eEiryss, Aiyna & Holt, max Kayazy, max Nyss Hunters with Valachev. We played Scenario 5.

This game was a blur but I can only say I played appallingly and was too worried, overly defensive and didn't pop my feat at the right time (if at all). I had an assassination on the butcher in the second turn with pEiryss/Stormwall and didn't take my opportunity, after losing most of my B13th, solos and Precursors and half of my Stormwall I went for the shots on the Butcher, left him with about 5 health, if one more of my shots hit or I had another half inch of range for the metal storms I would've got the assassination but instead I was obliterated with the Kayazy acrobating in to Haley.

So at 2-1 I qualified second in my group with a very respectable 10CPs (joint highest in the tournament with the winner of the other group) yet second lowest army points across both groups.

Round Two | Semi-Finals
Spoiler:
I had yet to play Lee and his beautifully modellrd, converted and painted Gatormen, they are seriously the best army I have seen. He took Rask with a Snapper, Swamp Horror, Blackhide, Bellows Crew, Totem Hunter, Witch Doctor, max Posse, min Ambushers, Wrongeye and Snapjaw and the shamblers. Scenario 1 was up this round.

I deployed first in a line, Precursors on the right then the ATGM, Haley, Stormwall and on the far right Black 13th, Harlen and Eiryss. Lee put the gatormen to his front right then the shamblers across his front middle, everything else behind except Totem Hunter who preyed Eiryss opposite her.

We both ran directly towards eachother as expected, second turn I managed to remove the totemn hunter and feated, not much else was around for me, I toed the zone and shield walled my Precursors, Lee ambushed Eiryss and the B13th, only taking out Watts and and Eiryss this turn.

This was one of those really strange games where time escaped me, Lee had popped feat so I was other thinking things no end and this turn hadn't been able to activate my Stormwall or Gun Mages who would've done a fair bit of damage considering where we were all placed, Ryan and Lynch took out the shamblers, the last one being taken by the Journeyman.

The Precursors and Gun Mages stood their ground mostly against the Posse and Shamblers, all four units trading blows, eventually though, the Gators got the better of them (rerolls on attacks for that posse were horrible). Stormwall took out Snapjaw but thr Wrastler one turned him when Lee rolled a triple 6, I knew it was over, all I had left was Ryan in melee with the Snapper and Horror (he was slowly doing damage), Journeyman and Haley at this point.

As I knew it was over, I wanted that Wrastler for what he did to the wall, Haley charged with max focus and did all but one point on him... Goddammit, shot from the Journeyman was all I had left, boosted the shot... Hit, needing a 8 to kill on 3 dice... I got a 7.

I lost, and lost hard but I had so much fun in this game, I really hope Lee goes on to win the tournament as he is a pleasure and his army is real fun. The fact you can't assassinate a warlock annoys me though!

Round Three | Third Place Play-Off
Spoiler:
The other club owner Hamish had lost to Dave who I played in my third game in his semi-final so I laid witness to his Convergence og Cyriss, I know little to nothing about them but their basic mechanic.

Hamish took Syntherion, Prime Axiom, Corollary, Diffuser, Cipher, Modulator and a heavy that was proxied that i cannot remember. Also Mechanics and two solos that act as arc nodes (I cannot remember their proper names.

We skimmed through and ended on Scenario 10.

During the first two games of this tournament, I really feared the look of this list, so much nuts to crack! Our Colossals were the only ones in thr tournament and in this final game they took centre field directly opposite eachother, my Precursors and solos took to the left of the Wall and all my Gun Mages went to the right of it. Hamish put all his heavies to the front, the ranged one opposite the Gun Mages and the others opposite the Precursors. His lights hid behind the Axiom with Synth and the mechanics B2B with it, the arc nodes took a flank each , turn one I ran everything up, Hamish did the same.

Turn two, the Precursors shield walled in the left zone, Harlan put some damage on the axiom as it had an upkeep on it, the Gun Mages spread out in the right zone, took out the arc node on their side and put some points on the ranged vector Haley feated and...

Stormwall charged the Axiom. The battle we all wanted to see, Stormwall loaded up on focus dropped the Axiom down to about 12 boxes, straight damage on 6 attacks was not great rolling from me (though I did miss one attack). Almost all the mechanics dropped to electro leaps too. I managed to black oil his melee vector, disrupt it with Eiryss and take out the last mechanic with a storm pod.

On Hamishes turn he completely went blank, forgetting Haleys feat he allocated one to the furthest right of his vectors. I had that vector go first, thinking it was a little to far to pass down to the Axiom but it was just in, then the Axiom who did three attacks of damage to the wall, his other vectors next, corollary last and then Syntherion, I woulda had a CP so he put the bomb made by Axiom to toe the zone with Haley in on the right.

It was practically all over, loaded up the stormwall who dropped the Axiom in 2 hits then it did its regen thing so had to use a third. The remaining focus was used to take out some boxes on his melee jack, I put out my pod and disrupted his two left side jacks, Gorman black oiled one, the precursors mini feated and charged the two jacks and the arc node guy left, taking out the node and putting serious damage on the two heavies. Harlan put some damage on the ranged jack who had Hot Shot upkept.

Journeyman took out the bomb and the ATGM and B13 put damage on the ranged vector.

Haley went in to the right zone and I got 2CPs. Hamish tried to do whatever Damage he could, Eiryss and 2 B13th fell, he put the corollary in the right zone to contest but killed no Precursors in the right zone, his Diffuser did a little damage to the wall and then Hamish conceded.

He knew I'd just push the Corollary out of the zone with the ATGM and the Stormwall/Precursors would take out the two right jacks and the rest of the Gun Mages/Harlan would probably take out his other heavy while Haley took the 2 CPs in the right zone and the rest of the gang likely took the left zone.

In this game I had just done everything I could right.

So in my first competative setting I have picked up a third place coin, I'm so unvelievably happy about my standing as before the tournament I would've expected 5/6 place!

tell me about your early or most fun competitive experiences
