Hello Dakka Dakka, the winds of change are upon me!

I have accomplished a 3k Taut list and feel like trying on something new. I play a very shoot-y list and would like to try out close combat with a mix of psychic powers. Now I have yet to read the 7th edition but I heard that the ally matrix is out the door. So, not worrying about who allies with who I am torn between Tyranids or Eldar.

So to help you, help me, here is what I am looking for:
Some Variety to play style, the one issue with Tau, though I love their fluff and models, is that they are shoot and then shoot some more.
- I like the idea of monstrous creatures, giant engines of destruction.
- I like "Gundam-esk units" this is looking at the wraith units of Eldar.
- I love the...Tyrmagon? I like the idea of a unit that makes more units.
- I like psychic powers
- I would like to play an army opponents have fun against. I am a social guy and having people enjoy playing me is very important.

A final note, if I was to play Tyranids it would be as a more "Elite" list, I don't have a problem with Horde, I Just like the looks of the Warriors and the "better" units. And I already have a few tyranid units from when I was a kid, over 10 years ago, not many but more than the 0 Eldar I have currently.

Thanks Dakka!

Well, before 7th hit i would caution you that owning both tau and eldar would make people immediately not like you, even if you never allied them lol. Guy at my store that was starting out didnt believe me, so he brought it anyway saying "its strong why wouldnt i?" and basically got outcasted for it lol. But thats gone so nevermind.

If you want a mix of psyker and melee, your best bet would probably be GK or hold off about a month and see what the new ork codex brings, since thers a lot of strong hints our psykers will be useful for once and our games are usually hilarious and fun even if we lose.

Eldar technically arent that assault-based. They can do it, and compared to tau are very good at it, but its usually exclusive to a couple of units that are even worth mentioning and typically end up just bullet-magnets not killing machines.
Nidz are psykers galore and melee is their thing. But they have their own psyker spells now, and from what ive witnessed at my flgs the new psyker phase really jacked them up. Thats just me though, i dont actually play them thats just observation.

To spice things up a bit, also consider CSM and demons. Both have psykers, and both really like close combat.

Demons have MCs, the best psyker in he game (which is also an MC, it turns out), and demons now have the demon factory, wherein demons summon more demons which summon more demons.

CSM also has an MC, but it's more about machines. Take a look at the maulerfiend and forgefiend. They're going to be a little more steampunk rather than mecha, but they're giant engines of destruction, that's for certain. They also have good psykers, and I don't think I've ever heard anyone complain about not liking to play against CSM with the one obvious exception of people unjustly wetting themselves because of helldrakes. Just don't take those and voila.

Eldar, as you mention is also going to be a good fit, what with them being space elves, and that having a pretty decent cross-over to people who like anime. Eldar also have the well-earned reputation as being the painter's army, if that's something you're interested in. Of course, no shortage of psychic powers either.

I guess my one concern with eldar is that they're going to wing up being an awful lot like your tau army. They're going to rely almost exclusively on mid-S shooting, not having THAT much going on with CC. Not to say they can never swing a sword, but eldar lists are known for mech gunlines for a reason. They will be more mobile... unless you don't actually use that mobility.

Tyranid are kind of a wild card. They could work really well for what you're looking for or they could work sort of poorly. I guess it depends on what your priorities are.

My issue with CSM is that one of the players I play regularly is a CSM player, I am one of those guys who likes to play armies that few others play. And, funny enough, Tyrnaids and Elder are the two least played in my group.

I am currently pursuing both codexs and I am really liking the tyranid codex. I do not see why people say the bugs are bad, they look as though they have a really strong codex with lots of deep striking units (I love DSing) The only thing that draws me to the Elder over the Nids is the Mecha wraith units.

If I was to start making a list of either army what would be recommended? For Nids I have 24 homogaunts and 24 termagaunts, a zoanthroap, a Lictor, Pyrovore, 6 warriors, some gargoyles...I used to have a hive tyrant but can't find it anywhere. S

Well you need a HQ, so get a Tyrant, and you'll want some giant monsters (and they are fun to paint) so grab one or three of those, and you should be good to go.

The will of the hive is always the same: HUNGER
