Good morning all. I wanted to check with the community and see if its general consensus that blasts/templates now hit all levels instead of the 'one or nothing' method in 6th edition.

Unfortunately it's ambiguous now.

"Once the final position of the blast marker has been determined, take a good look at it from above – each unit suffers one hit for each of their models which is fully or partially beneath the blast marker, even if those models are not within the firer’s line of sight. "

According to the wording, you are looking to SEE what models are under it. It could be argued that if you cannot see them under the template, they can't be hit. This feels gamey to me, and opens a very large can of worms.

The are physically underneath the template regardless, and you are told to ignore LOS... but only from the models perspective.

I don't think there's a good 100% arguable RAW ruling on this. Big surprise.

HIWPI is all levels are hit if they are underneath the template.

RAW could go either way.

My group however is playing it as only models you can see under the template can be hit.

This is a closer interpretation to the old rules and is the most likely way to be correct.

RAW there is no good answer. My play group has already decided to treat it exactly as it was in 6th ed. Blasts land on the floor you aim at, and barrage hit the first floor the run into from above. No RAW justification, but the 6th ed method was elegant and made sense. So why change it.

Just the models beneath the template, not under. So RAW blasts & barrages only hit one floor.

beneath: directly underneath, typically with close contact.

ie beneath the marker in close contact with the marker

Models you can see under the template seems the best solution. Its stuff raining down, it hits the top floor and trickles down to the second floor, some models are protected by the ceiling, some are not...

I find it incredibly stupid that GW left this out of the rulebook. It was clear in every other edition.

Can you choose which level of a ruins you aim a template weapon at? Currently, RAW it seems like you can? What about Barrage not being able to hit models under the top level of a ruins?

The whole thing is horribly ambiguous. I really think GW was hasty with the publication of this ruleset.

Yes it was clear in every previous edition. It's been removed, so no more hiding on different levels. All models underneath are hit. BAM. It's not ambiguous if you wipe your mind clean from previous editions and go with what's written today.

Makes perfect sense to me and my gaming group.

I'd go with Template, but not with Barrage. Blast is possible to have an ok as well (it's direct targeting), as long it can see the targeted model (template too)
