I'm not a big fan of the majority of the Daemon models that GW puts out.
Are there any good alternatives from competing producers. Kromlech has some decent looking Nurglish models, but I'm not a fan of painting boils and puss.

MageKnight Dungeons! WizKids has put out tons of fully painted monstrous creatures in their Smashing Success (read: failure) that is MageKnight!
You can probably buy a few hundred (thousand) of them fairly cheap.
D&D Chainmail also has some artistic demons available, as does the Pathfinder series.
Of course, if you're looking to paint your own models, then no... everyone else sucks.

Doesn't help you yet but at some point in the near future I think Mantic will be releasing their Abyssal faction for Kings of War - demons and gargoyle-looking things. No idea when though :(

It's a little unorthodox, but the Mountain Orc models from Shieldwolf Miniatures could make nice demons with the right paintscheme. The heads are suitably demonically crazed, and in red they'd make neat blootletters, in pink/purple they'd make nice horrors if you trim off the weapons and do a little GS work. They're also hard plastic and very reasonably priced. http://www.shieldwolfminiatures.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=46

I've been collecting daemons since 2012, the whole ethos of the army being to use alternative models where possible or where the official model simply wasn't my preferred choice.
The linked thread was a great inspiration, but I have found that anything needed in large numbers, such as the various lesser daemon troops choices, are simply more economic to buy from GW, and generally aren't that often surpassed by third parties.
Character models, Princes, GDs and smaller elite units are a different matter though, there's loads of choices out there.

Reaper minis make a plethora of suitable models for greater daemons (with a little bit if basing to give it that height boost forsome of the models) and they also have a few models that would work for lesser daemons as well. I have a whole slaanesh flying circus and a fiendstar thanks to reaper and they were pretty cheap too.

Its the Plague Bearers and Pink Horror models that I'm not personally fond of...too cutesy for my taste, but it would seem to me the best stats for Objective Secured camping.
I think the model Paradigm pictured would actually be a cool alternative to Plague Bearers, with the color scheme pictured...maybe with just a little torch job for Nurgle effect.
Thanks for the leads so far!

I personally run GW Beastmen Gors as Daemonettes and plan on converting some Crypt Ghouls into horrors.
Some models from the DeepWars game can look pretty daemonic if you paint them right ( http://antimatter-games.com/games/deepwars/) , I use a Cephalid Biomancer as a Tzeentch Herald myself.

I saw it in another thread and thought he was trying to make a point about people knee-jerk selling their 40k armies or something

I was actually interested in that until I saw him spamming links on here.
On topic, Raging Heroes makes a number of models that are good replacements for various GW units. I use their Preying Mantises for my own Daemonettes, and they have a model that I've been eying for a Nurgle prince.
