Subject: Average range of basic weapons for each army?

I'm trying to learn what type of things to expect when facing certain armies, such as the stats of certain units and which weapons they can bring. The BRB makes learning about unit stats fairly simple, by labeling what unit type it is along with it's unique stats, but it's harder when it comes to weapons. It still has the stats labeled clearly, but it doesn't say anywhere which units can run them.
So my question is this:
Apart from buying each codex individually, is there a way in which I can learn which weapons certain units can field? I'm primarily interested in only what basic infantry usually field, so as to get a better understanding on how far away I should keep my units in combat. Any help?

Sisters - Boltguns
IG - Lasguns
Eldar - Shuriken Catapults
Dark Eldar - I forget
Tau - I forget
Orks - shootas and sluggas
Tyranids and Daemons - varies based on unit selections.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
Orks always ride in single file to hide their strength and numbers.

The back of the 6th ed. BRB had a large table of every weapons stats (at the time).
The 7th ed. BRB has a few of the most common weapons.
Generally the following rings true:
6' pistols
12' rapid fire
24' single shot
36' / 48' heavy
You will find the odd variance such as Hot-Shot Lasguns being 18' and I believe Tau Pule Rifles being 15' rapid, 30' single (Thanks Kain for the correction on the Tau!)
Depending on the force you'll likely meet their strength at each of those various ranges.
Space Marines: 12' and 36'/48'
Tau 15' and >36'
Imperials: 12' and 36'/48'
Chaos: 12' and 36'/48'
Orks: 6' and 18'
EDIT: Have ammended Tau thanks to Kain for the correction

I think the main thing you need to worry about is what each weapon does in addition to the strength/AP, because Eldar guns have pseudo-rending (AP2 on 6s to wound), Necrons have the Gauss rule (automatically cause a wound/glance on a 6, regardless of toughness), and Dark Eldar all have Poisoned (4+) weapons.
Generally speaking, though, you're looking at anywhere from 12" to 24" range, typically either Assault 2 or Rapid Fire, and Strength 4/AP 5. This changes slightly from codex to codex, however, so you're probably best off just asking your opponent if you aren't sure.

The tau's pulse rifles are 15" rapid fire and 30" single shot.
Ork shootas are assault two at 18 inches.
