Had this come up today in a local game. We had a challenge between my librarian and my friends tau commander. He originally was joined to a stealth suit unit. My librarian was assaulting with assault marines. After the first round his commander was all that was left with two wounds left. My assault marines killed all the stealth suits and did one wound to his commander that bled over into the combat. His commander passed his leadership we stayed in combat. Now next round do my assault marines still get to attack into the challenge via the outside forces rules on page 103

Actually no, only permission exists for wounds to be allocated. As no permission exists for the outside forces to hit a challenge combatant they have no wounds to allocate.

You are misreading it. They are never 'given permission' to allocate wounds to the model in the challlenge. They are restricted so the *can't* allocate wounds until all the other models are dead.

The attackers are locked in combat and they are engaged, thus they can roll to hit, can roll to wound, and can allocate wounds.... they are restricted to allocating those wounds to the 'mooks' until they are all dead, then they can allocate them to the challenge model.

No. At no point are they given permission to allocate attacks to a challenge combatant. They are only given permission to allocate excess wounds from thier wound pool if all other enemy models outside the challenge are slain.

Attacks are allocated to units, not models. They're engaged to that unit, which gives them permission to attack that unit. What's preventing them from attacking?

Fair point, had a good reread and yes that's right. Still got sixth stuck in the head.

Just so I understand extra wounds can spill over both directions? From the challenge combat to the regular folks and from the regular folks to the challenge?

This came up in a game today and I really feel it's a got to be a mistake on GW's part.

At least I'm hoping it was and we see an FAQ/Errata soon that corrects it. Otherwise, I don't see challenges being of much use for any purpose at all anymore; in which case, they should have just gotten rid of them all together.

They pretty explicitly spell it out, so it's absolutely what they intended. Which, yes, does make Challenges pretty useless except for manipulating the wound allocation order or majority WS/T rules.

In lew of precision strikes (which are no longer a given), challenges prevent characters from hiding in a crowd.

About all they are good for is to get rid of the opposing character, while still having to take your lumps from everyone else.

There are also some abilities that only work in challenges, so there is still a purpose to the challenge it just can't be used to keep your lone character untouched while he kicks the crud out of the sergeants in your enemies units.

it also stops a bloodthirster from charging plague marines and being stuck only killing one. conversely, it stops the plague marines from getting stuck watching their champion get the snot kicked out of him with nothing to do but cheer. no more hiding in challenges, and no more mitigating extra charge attacks with them either.
