my FLGS only has official warhammer nights once a week, and I've only been going for 2 months so I haven't felt comfortable asking people for contact information so we can play other times in the week.

How do you practice if you can't get more games in your week?

Are games against yourself worth anything?

If your store has a forum or Facebook page post there looking for games, otherwise talk to people about playing other days. Unfortunately if you aren't able to swap contact info at all it can be hard. The best bet is to talk to people and see if there are other days they would be there and want a game.

You can also try vassal40k it's by no means perfect but it can work.

You could make them worth something. I'm sure someone on the internet has made a system for Controlling non-player armies. Or, you could run specific scenarios.

To be honest, you're lucky to get a couple of games a week, I get one a month if I'm lucky, and I'm sure many gamers would be envious of such an opportunity

But to be more constructive, playing against yourself can be fun if you just want to roll some dice and kill some time, but as a tactical exercise it's probably pointless. That said, it can be good for testing out units and getting a feel for what they're capable of.

Hmm, I have to disagree. So long as you have a pretty good handle on the rules, playing with yourself can be a lot like playing chess with yourself. You can try out different tactical options and also get a better feel for various situational probabilities.

playing yourself is a great way to test units in real world applications and test tactics , however i agree its not fully satisfying since you know what your response to any given move with be. However it can work for practice especially if you play two armies already and want to see different tactics in action for both.

I play once a week at most, and consider it more than enough. It takes a great deal of time to develop skill with an army. I'd definitely put out some feelers with people though. Just ask if they play at all during the week, and just be conversational about it.

If you cant get games watch battle reports online. See what people do, strategies, what units work well etc etc

Use Vasal , at least that is what people play the game here with.

Maybe try to start a league at your FLGS? Worked wonders at my FLGS for a while.

Everything I say, barring quotes and researched information, is my personal opinion. Not fact.

i haven't played a game of 40k in over a year. I still collect and mostly paint now, waiting for my hiatus to be over once i get to leave key west. My wife is a wargamer, but she prefers to play warmahordes, so my warmahordes collection has doubled in the year i've been down here.
sadly nobody here has played it, and very few have even heard of it.

i keep my gaming IQ up via batreps, i'll sit with rulebooks in hand and try to follow along with the videos. I challenge myself to write lists at various point levels that would be effective against both armies in the batrep. also, this forum does wonders to answer questions i may have.
