So my wife owns about 1000pts worth of Orks, mostly cobbled together from AoBR sets and a few donations from friends leaving the game. Between Shootas and Sluggas, we have about 100 Boyz that I have been painting, along with... oh, 10-12 Nobs, a couple Warbosses, and a Mek Boy. She also, again from AoBR boxes ended up with 6-7 Deffkoptas.
Now we're picking up some staples with an eye toward the future, and while a lot of units are in question, it seems like Trukks and Battlewagons never go out of style.
How many of each are a good "safe" purchase?
Are there any other staples which are sure purchases, even without seeing the incoming codex?

7th edition is just out, and ours is such an old codex that everything can change, really. At this point there's no "safe" purchase. Wait for a week, read the new book and decide!

Well, with vehicles in general getting such a nice bump in durability, I figured these old go-to items were already worth having in a collection, and are probably even more worthy now.
I'll wait, I just have a decent opportunity to pick up a few for a decent price, so its a bit of a crap shoot.

If you can get a good deal on something then I'd go for it. Even if the unit ends up being sub par, so what? As long as it looks cool it's all good.

Well, from a fellow DakkaDakka user I picked up three Killa Kanz, two Trukks, and a Battlewagon, all brand new on sprue for $138 shipped.
A friend getting out of the game sold me two Trukks, a new on sprue box of Loota/Burna Boyz, a Weird Boy, two Pain Boyz, a Deff Dread, another 40 Shoota Boyz, a single MANZ, and a Shokk Attack Gun Mekboy for $50.
Combined with my wife's 100-ish Shoota/Sluggas, Warbosses, Nobs, and Deff-Koptas, I figure she has some options until the Codex drops and I can put a couple hundred toward seriously filling in gaps, and getting her up to an actual good 1500- 1850pt list.

Barring a nerf in the new 'dex, 9 killa kanz have always served me very well.
Battlewagons are handy too, but I'd definately wait till the new book to make any purchases. Who knows what's gonna get boinked to the bottom of the barrel.
Lootas used to be great, but since they're really popular already, I grimly expect them to be utterly useless soon...
Also, they're really easy to convert, anyway.
That sounds like a pretty solid force as it is.

I suggest getting a couple boxes of Grotz, because they're cheap enough to fit any list and any budget. When all you need is a body, Grotz can do that. Just don't ask them to do anything like shoot, or get shot at, or god forbid get into melee.
Seriously though, I love em. There's no cheaper way in the game to hold an out-of-the-way objective while giving your opponent bigger things to worry about.

Also Gretchin are so small that they can hide on an objective inside a building, and be out of sight. Often my opponents have actually forgotten that they exist

I would not suggest buying anything for a month. It's really not a long time.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

If you don't mind using unofficial models there is a Russian company called Tehnolog that does a number of 40K style kits including some stuff that looks really Orky.

They are distributed in the USA by Imex and I think you can get them at Walmart.
