So I was coming up with a naming scheme for my
IG, and I decided I wanted to mix numbers and letters to make the designations more unique. Obviously, using straight up letters is too boring. I thought about using Greek letter names or the
NATO Phonetic Alphabet, but the former is a bit overdone and the latter, while an excellent way to evoke military overtones, is a wee bit anachronistic. So I decided to come up with an Imperial Phonetic Alphabet for use in personal fluff, and a few minutes with a Latin dictionary later I had one. Tell me what you think!
Astra
Bellator
Calix
Dictum
Evangel
Ferrus
Gladius
Humilis
Ignis
Juris
Lamenta
Malleus
Nihil
Orichalcum
Penitent
Quercus
Rector
Sanctum
Thorax
Ultra
Vindictus
Xiphias
By the way, this isn't supposed to function well as a phonetic alphabet (the purpose of the NATO one is to make communication with bad reception easier, so each word sounds very distinct from the others). I chose the words based entirely on how badass they'll sound in phrases like "Squad Ferrus secured the objective" and "this transmission requires clearance IGNIS RECTOR or above." And you'll notice some of the letters are missing, as Latin doesn't have K, W, Y, or Z in it natively (or X, really, but the dictionary had a single entry, it sounded pretty cool, and it means swordfish, so it's perfect for passwords). I also mostly tried to avoid words that are closely tied to common fluff elements. Any suggestions for the missing letters that keep a High Gothic aesthetic even if they're not Latin? Any better ideas for the existing letters?
