Been running a few abyssal staves in my necron army recently and someone forfeited a game when we couldn't come to an agreement on what leadership value to use with it.

The way I've interpreted it is that leadership tests are taken using the highest leadership in the unit. He believed that models in a unit use the highest leadership in the unit and thus leadership 8 space marines become leadership 10. This also came up in regards to mind shackle scarabs.

Looking at the "characters as leaders" part of the character section in BRB, it appears to agree with my interpretation and thus I believe wounds should be taken using majority leadership as it is not a leadership test.

On the subject of mind shackle scarabs, I believe that because it is a single model taking a leadership test and not the unit; that the model must use his own leadership value to take the test.

Can anyone clarify if my position is correct?

The Abyssal staff does not cause a moral check/leadership check,or any kind of leadership test in way shape or form. It like any other weapon checks to see what the majority of Stat x is when compared to Stat y and then goes from there.

How silly would it sound to say that to wound my Necron wraiths with my Destroyer Lord you needed to roll 5"s when using bolters against T5 of the DLord when the Majority of the Toughness is t4.

So the Abyssal Staff wounding against Ld 8 needs 4's it is only Necrons that require 6's as they are all Ld 10

MSS use the model in base to base thats checking its leadership value to swing.

Or enough Orks to be Ld10, which is 10 or more. ;-)

As above.

Your only clue is that tests against he unit, apart from leadership tests, are on the majority value, not the highest. This is NOT a leadership test, just using the Ld value to compare against, so the only way you have to resolve this is with majority Ld value.

MSS is specifically a Ld test, and as per the rules for Ld tests when it is called upon for a model to make the test they have to use THEIR ld.

Remember that Orks, until Friday, replace their Ld with their mob size, so they can also be Ld10 for both Abyssal and MSS
