G'day all,

I've oft desired an Ork Speed Freeks army with lots of hot rod style flame jobs on all the vehicles. Going back to Epic 40k days, I can find lots of little buggies and such that I painted in my early days in the hobby with poorly painted flame jobs. Since the new Orks are on the horizon I thought I'd revisit the idea once again.

Basically what I'm going for is something along the lines of this:

Now, da problem. I look at all the current orky vehicles and notice that they have so many randomly bolted on bitz and such that there's no place to paint my beautiful flames anymore!

Has anyone tried "cleaning up" Ork vehicles, removing all the random junk so that you can use more cool freehand designs like I'm wanting to do? Or do you think it would be prohibitively difficult? Any thoughts on how to do it?

WAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!!

Since orks are happy to loot other races' vehicles, any newly looted vehicles may indeed look quite 'clean' - it's only when meks start repairing and 'improving' vehicles that the rivetted and patched look begins.

Fluff-wise, I can see the Deffskull Loota and Blood Axe clans being particularly likely to have 'cleaner' vehicles - the former coz they love looting so much, and the latter because they imitate the Imperium. Evil Sunz would certainly happily steal any fast-looking loud vehicle they get their hands on, but would see no reason to keep such a vehicle 'clean' looking.

Modelling-wise, a 'clean' look depends enormously on whatever kit you're starting with. Shaving/cutting/filing off detail can be horribly difficult. Conversion may be the answer - e.g. if a model's mudguards are too heavily detailed to paint flames on easily, replace them with a plainer plasticard version.
