I recently moved to Vietnam for work and a change of pace, thought what the hell i'll tote my 40k along too!!
Little did I know... It's really hard to get a hold of some stuff here!!
Want to strip a bunch of models, but having a hard time finding anything do do it with!
Here's what I know works and cannot find
- Simple Green
- Dettol
Here's what I know doesn't really work
- Brake Fluid
- Turpentine
- Acetone
ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS AND I WILL LOVE YOU ETERNALLY.

I use simple denaturated alcohol (the red/pink one, usually used for house cleaning): drown the model, scrub with an old toothbrush.
Most superficial layers come off in a matter of minutes, and if you forget the model for a week, you don't ruin it - at worst the plastic gets a pinkish hue, but all the paint is removed (on the second scrub if the first leaves some residues).

I am surprised that you "know" brake fluid doesn't really work, as I have been using nothing but brake fluid for the last 8-10 years.

used it before, didn't quite do the job for myself, damaged the plastic as did all the ones in that category. My personal experience, maybe the chemical composition of the one you used was different. If you are aware of the active chemical in the break fluid please let me know. I am simply after helpful alternatives as it's quite hard to get a hold of things here, please play nice.

my go to for plastic and metal models is 99% isopropyl alcohol (aka rubbing alcohol). its safe for plastics, but after about a 2 hour soak and a toothbrush you should be good.
Sadly this will destroy resin/fincast, so if I have to strip resin i use simple green.
