I've searched in the forum an brb, and I can't work out why the tactical objectives are categorised by 'type' and what bearing that has in the game. Am I being exceedingly dim or just quite dim?

Most likely, so some future rules could refer given types.

Another thing people often fail to notice about them: everyone that says "well, there should be some mechanic to let you get rid of objectives you cant possibly finish"
Yea, you are complaining without proper reading. there IS such a mechanic. you can discard an objective at the end of your turn, and given how generation works, it will probably get replaced soon.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

The reason for having 3 different "types" of objectives is to allow you to potentially get the "capture objective 1" mission multiple times despite the fact that once you discard an objective (or complete it) it is gone for the game.

I think the question is what purpose the types determined by the first d6 roll are - i.e. Capture and Control, Take and Hold, Storm and Defend, Seize Ground, Purge and Annihilation - rather than why the first 3 function identically

I beleive one of the maelstrom of war missions specifies that if the opponent has a take & hold mission, you can complete it yourself and make him discard the objective. there may be others which allow you to complete certain types of mission for extra points, or complete a certain type of mission regardless of who's got that mission.

Nope, it works for all three "secure objective" type missions.

We can differentiate the cards by their numbers as well. So "type" is not necessary for that purpose.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I thought I was missing some important game mechanic.

All of those mean the same thing linguistically and game wise. It's just a more fun way of saying "you can get this same mission card three times."
