Second Game in 7th!

Ran the orks again on Monday, decided to try out a kan wall list to give myself a break from speed freeks, and my goodness did I miss my trukks by turn 2…

I had a full force organisation:

KFF Mek
KFF Mek
Dread w/ 2 BS
Dread w/ 2 skorchas, riggers & plates
20 shootas, PK BP nob
20 shootas, PK BP nob
30 grots, 3 herders
30 grots, 3 herders
10 lootas
10 lootas
7 kommandos with 2 burnas
Deffkopta, TL RL
Deffkopta, TL RL
10 stormboys, PK BP nob
3 killa Kans w/ RL
3 killa Kans w/ RL
3 killa Kans w/ grotzookas

I ended up facing a Tau player, which wasn’t Ideal! I was hoping to see how the new smash rules make walkers interact with nids, but no nid players arrived :(

The tau player had (roughly):
A skyray
A hammerhead
An ethereal
1 squad of pathfinders
4 squads of fire warriors
10 sniper drones
3 stealth suits w/ 2 gun drones
And a farsight bomb, coming in at around 700 points, with about 8 suits and 14 gun drones. Woo.

We rolled the maelstrom of war mission with secret objectives, and we deployed in hammer & anvil style. There was a big rock in the middle of my deployment zone, so I had to split my army up somewhat. I deployed first, and put 6 kans on one side, 3 kans on the other, 1 dread on each and the grots were right hand side and centrally behind, to advance and to take objectives respectively. 1 kopta sat in the middle of my line, the other and the kommandos went to outflank.

The tau deployed further back than I would have liked, the hammerhead & skyray tucked into a corner where I was unlikely to get them. Otherwise a typical gunline, with the sniper drones right at the back.

Orks went first. Everything moved & ran, the lootas obliterated the sniper drones, leaving only the commander and one drone, who exchanged a worried glance and promptly left the battlefield. The other unit of lootas killed a couple of guys on the objective I needed, but didn’t get them off it. The kopta had scout moved forward then moved again, and lined up to take a pot-shot at the skyray; He didn’t jink, I didn’t hit. Orks get first blood for the gun drones, roll on the tau turn!
1:0 to the orks.

Tau turn sees very little movement, and quite a lot of shooting. He used 2 of his units to kill the deffkopta, thanks to his poor rolls to hit on the first squad only causing 1 wound. He used markerlights to light up the zooka kans on my left side, then proceeded to… …stun one. Skyray missed with both of its “hits on 2+” missiles, and the hammerhead managed to penetrate with the edge of its blast (which also killed 6 boys) and cause the stunned result. All in all, a disappointing round for the tau. He got an objective, and made the game even.
1:1

Ork turn 2 sees both outflankers arrive, burna-‘mandos position themselves by a unit that’s rather exposed, rokkit kopta gets behind the hammerhead. Kans move forward, dreads move forward, boys & grots move forward, spacing out a bit, stormboys break cover and aim to finish off the unit that’s about to be burned.
Ork shooting phase sees the ethereal unit halved by loota fire, and the pathfinders only lose one of theirs. The zooka Kans open fire on some fire warriors, and hit everything but, scoring only 1 direct hit and some really wild scattering. They still kill 5 though. Unfortunately they can’t charge due to one being stunned. Must get plates in future. Rokkit kopta makes the hammerhead jink, and still manages to get a pen through, leaving it shaken. Rokkit kans decide to run, now that the hammerhead isn’t scary for a turn, and get a bit closer to their targets. Burnas on kommandos kill the entire squad, leaving the stormboys painfully exposed. They try to run for cover and get a 1. Bye bye stormboys…
Orks achieve an objective, thanks to the grots. We discard the one that asks us to kill a psyker…
2:1 to the orks.

Tau turn 2, the farsight bomb arrives, nearly deploys in front of the kans but then decides he wants to go between the 2 pillars of gretchin – I allow it. His stealth suits outflank and kill 4 lootas with their firepower. The gunline opens up, trying to glance kans but failing. All but 3 of the stormboys die. One squad of grots is gunned down by gun drones, and the lootas by the suits. The grots run, the stormboys try to run but get twatted by the nob, then don’t run, lootas run 4 inches.
Tau got an objective, can’t remember which.
2:2

Orks turn 3 sees everyone get close enough to try to charge, boys & kans & grots converge on the farsight bomm, lootas regroup and get a bead on them too, the 5 remaining kommandos aim for the pathfinders. WAAAGH! Were declared, and careful shooting sees a lot of the bomb die – shootas and grot cleared the drones from around them, then 3 rokkit kans kill 2 of them, more shootas kill another, lootas kill another, and we charge. Only the grots and the shootas make it. Damn defensive grenades make it difficult. PK nob challenges, to try and slay the warlord, sadly farsight hits & wounds twice. The grots kill off 3 drones, and the boys kill off the other 3 and a suit. Some grots die, a boy dies, orks lose by 1 but are fearless, grots pass their check. The entire front of the army fails their charges, even with re-rolls. Stormboys have taken an objective for da orks, I discard another impossible one.
3:2 to da orks.

Tau turn 3 is quite devastating. The kommandos die, the stormboys die, the skyray moves forward to get a good shot on the dread. Two units of crippled pathfinders run forwards and… …charge? Haywire grenades ruin the dread and the kans on my right flank, the skorcha dread, so tantalisingly close, gets immobilised. Farsight fails to kill a runtherd in a challenge; the rest of his squad is cut down. Despite losing by 2, he stays there. Tau get an objective for keeping me off his back field.
3:3

Ork turn 4 is the last. The kans fire their zookas at the skyray, and as I had hoped they scatter into the firewarriors nearby, killing 3. The boys advance to avenge the right flank, and pepper the firewarriors with lead, killing 2 more. Farsight is killed by gretchin, such is their way, and the rokkit kans kill the stealth suits off, clearing my backfield. zooka kans kill the skyray in assault, and Orks get 3 victory points; slay the warlord, big game hunter (kill a vehicle) and clearing my backfield.
6:3 to da orks!

Tau player rolls for new objectives, and finds he has 3 he can’t complete – manifest a psychic power, kill a psyker and cleanse the skies. He concedes, as he can see how close I am to tabling him anyway.

Orks win!

Why do we need a new codex again…?

First time in awhile I have seen a Tau list without ANY Riptides. Grats on your win.

thanks. The tau player round here doesn't like the riptide, he thinks it's not in keeping with tau so much. it's good to have fun players around rather than competitive ones, otherwise I'd never get away with these experimental lists!

Nice batrep. Thanks for sharing.
As a longtime ork player, I agree that our ancient codex still performs very well. Having said that, I am looking forward to the new dex just to see how much it changes things up.
But then....maybe I should be careful what I wish for.

This battrep IMHO is a great example of the objective cards making it anyones game. It adds enough luck to the game that even iff things go terribly (like missing ALL your charge rolls) you can still stomp someone.

Sounds like you had a great game.

Seems like it was a good game. I hope fun was had on both sides. I have yet to play my first 7th edition battle (which will be this weekend). So I'm trying to come up with a good list to play against tyranids. I think the tau player must have put up a fight at least against orks but I think he should have had, yes at least 1 riptide (mine doesn't get that many kills but it is very nice to have something that everything shoots at to soak up fire and still be standing). Also, why no shadow sun in the far sight bomb? I played far sight and his bomb without shadow sun once and got destroyed with little effect. Shadowsun is excellent at increasing the survivability of the bomb and devastation as well. Anyways hope it was a good battle!

I see you discarded two Maelstrom cards that you could not play. Did you guys play where you could redraw immediately if it was an unplayable card or did you sit on them for the game, playing the BRB rules?

Congrats on the win; I like the list. I am hoping we can get Kans back with the 7th rules and the new codex. All these Big Mek- heavy WDs lately have me excited about all the zonky new toys our codex should give us.

we were playing as per rulebook, so if we got one we couldn't do we'd have to wait 'til the end of the turn to discard it as normal.

Tau player doesn't like the riptides, he thinks both their model and the rules don't fit with tau, so he doesn't play them. I agree with him that no army has any "auto-includes" when you're playing for fun, no matter how much people harp on about heldrakes and riptides and wraithknights and the like. and surprise surprise, we always have fun!

Did that play a major part in the demise of the Tau player or was it just one-sided from the beginning in the Orks favor?

I'd love to have watched that game. I get a sick sense of pleasure whenever Tau loses.

In the works

Warhammer 40k. Enjoy it or go play something else. Life is too short to complain.

Waiting at the Dark Tower steps..

Way to make Mork and Gork proud! Looks like a awesome game I like your list and may use it against my friend who plays tau (sadly he bring two riptides where ever he goes)

I think his reluctance to move played the biggest part. he failed almost every "secure objective..." mission. I had a couple of card I couldn't do like "kill an enemy psyker" and "destroy an enemy building" which balanced it out. one thing I've learnt with maelstrom is not to cling to objectives you might be able to do, like kill a psyker when facing a jetseer-star or destroy a flier if your sole hope is a bit of big-shoota fire glancing it down. just discard it and hope for a better one, it's too late once he's killed your only hope of it.

the fact that he drew 3 "impossible" ones was why he conceded, but that's mostly because he didn't move at all and so the objectives he didn't have, he couldn't get. only one of his last objectives was actually impossible, as I had no buildings.
