Was watching a tournament recently using the new 7th edition rules and saw a GK player just trounce every other army at the match, elder, deamons, didn't matter.
My main army has been tyranids for the longest time, but recently have kinda stopped playing because it seems like my chances of winning are a lot lower than normal (granted we play a lot of purge the alien, so it's not very tactical originated games)
Was thinking about ebaying my current tyranid army and just caving in an buying Grey Knight models.
Would this be a good, or bad idea in people prospective?

Bad. But do what you want. If the Nids aren't feeling that fun to you, go for GK
I hope they are the new hot, I picked up a 2k force of them for around $125 a few months ago. Always hoping that was a good buy.

The other option would be to play things other than just purge the alien. That could definitely help improve things for you as well. It may improve things in your play group rather than just switching armies, is there a reason you play almost nothing but purge the alien?
Though if you do continue to do pretty much nothing but purge the alien you would definitely benefit from a more elite army.

Alot of the people in my LGS are fairly new, and purge the alien is pretty much the easiest ruleset to follow, so we play that to get more used to the rules for our applicable armies. The GK player is probably the one most familiar with the game in our area.
He recently went to a tournament style gameplay outside our area and just tabled server armies using 7th edition rules and the new psker stuff, so i was thinking it'd just be more practical to goto a Grey Knight army since most of what i've been reading about tyranid in 7th is there not really competitive and kinda got shafted in the new phase. (I know in 6th edition I had to cheese the GK player with flyers to get my only win against him and at least one thing I used against him (vector strike and charge) I won't be able to use anymore since the nerf, where all that seemed to happen to him was an overall buff. It's a shame though, I really liked the Tyranid story and models (even though I still can't figure out what you use homogaunts for, other then like, terrible paper weights.)

My joke army turned into a dirty army, once again. Not sure how I feel about it because I imagine it'll get played a lot less.
Don't chase the "meta" or the power creep. Build the army you want to build. Buy the units you want to buy (within reason, don't buy Mandrakes unless you want shelf ornaments), and learn to adapt the best you can.
At the tournaments I went to in 6E, it was all about not getting your bad match up. Who knows what it's going to be in 7E, but it's too early to jump an army ship. Given the fast paced purge of rules, it's better to think about how your current army can be played different.
Also, have you heard of Skyblight and Living Artillery? Either of those makes Nids extremely gross. Remember, Rippers are super scoring units now, so say "screw it" to gants, gaunts, and warriors. Minimum Rippers and bring 4 Dakka Flyrants. Watch people enjoy that.

What list was he using?
I love my Nids and I win with them a lot. Flying and shooting now is King Nid. If they can't ground your HTs, Crones, and Harpies you win. My bio titan is really nasty too.

I think selling your army to get a stronger army is a bad idea. Then again if you play the game to win and for competition I guess do whatever.
Just know that every new codex that comes out has a chance to change the "top tier armies". When the 6th edition daemons came out, I watched ebay fill with armies of people jumping off daemons. 2 months later they were buying their armies back for flying circus, then screamerstar.
I watched a local dude sell his IG army for TauDar when it became the new cheese. I heard around that he is looking for a buyer for all the tau stuff. He plays to win, and spends a lot of money doing it. He also has a tough time getting a game because he is an donkey-cave.

If you want to win in a highly competitive meta without a depressing sea of Skyblight Swarm, FMC, Single Zoan, and Living artillery spam monobuilds? Yes, ditch your Tyranids and delete all memories of liking the army and start praising the emperor.
If you want to stick to your army through thick and thin hoping for better days, stay with the Tyranids.
My packrat mentality and the sheer size of my collection precludes me parting with so much as a single spinefist bit but the Tyranids have been screwed over twice by GW. By the same Codex Writer, who has repeatedly shown he has no fondness or love for the army.

The Necrons are another ship that you can jump to if you're tired of the same mouthbreather screwing over your army every time he touches your next codex.

Keep the Tyranids and just get more and more and more Gaunts!!! Genestealers too.
You should be able to find them cheaply if others are feeling the way you are about them at present and when that army comes back you will be ready to ride the tide (of Gaunts!).
That being said GK armies have long been realized with a low model count so it shouldn't be that much to get enough to have a 1500 pts army of them.
