Hi, does anyone know what happened to this fantastic game? I have been trying to get a hold of the rulebook for ages...

I know it was available as a free PDF from the designer's website for a long time, but his site has been unavailable since the beginning of this year

Yeah, GZG mostly just do minis at this point. New versions for Stargrunt and Full Thrust have basically been oft rumoured vapourware at this point.

That said GZG seems to have also passed the Stargrunt II torch on to Tomorrow's War which is quite similar in a lot of ways (and the rulebooks are quite pretty to boot). They retain a similar pool-based firefight mechanic, stepped morale and a few other bits. But where SGII feels like 'Nam in Space, Tomorrow's War tends to be a bit more modern (think Afghanistan in Space) and can handle a bit more drift in terms of genre with optional rules (such as being able to do aliens without much issue).

The action-reaction mechanics of Tomorrow's War (the same ones used for their modern game Force on Force) are also pretty neat.

But yeah, if you are looking for the original SGII rules in hard copy you will have your best luck trying to find them used on eBay or something. Not sure there is much call for a new print run of the old rules especially since Tuffley has basically endorsed TW as the spiritual successor of Star Grunt. There are still some things I love about SGII and I would love to see a new edition (or reprint of the old), but I doubt it will happen.

I could not figure how this game was supposed to end. I was always rolling on D4s, for stuff that could only be killed on 8s. Very counter-intuitive. And lots of counters.

Ronin_eX pretty much summed it up.

My buddy has a hardcopy and I borrowed it to read through it. Seems like a workable game, but far to many chits and counters for me to even want to play. Really seems to harken back to earlier games and feels dated, as compared to Full Thrust, which the club plays now and then and still feels reasonably contemporary and unencumbered.

TW, pretty much fills the same niche today, though I still can't believe that they took a game as good as TW and made a rulebook as difficult to use as the TW book is.

As for acquiring a copy of SGII. I see it pop up fairly regularly on TMP, and usually for quite a reasonable price (around 10 bucks or so) though I haven't exactly been looking elsewhere. A wanted ad there would probably net you one quickly, though you may want to try here or at Bartertown before TMP as using their classifieds requires a small fee for becoming a supporting member.
