I know Terminator heavy armies are bad. I know C: DA is shabby. Honestly though, I had a good streak of strong wins with my mixed wing (generally Belial, PFG Techmarine on bike, 20 terminators, a scout squad, a tac squad in Rhino, a Ravenwing squad with MM AB, and two TLAC Dreads)

But the last 3 games I've gotten my butt kicked! First by Nids at the end of 6th and then by a "Battle Force" drop pod BA list in 7th.

I started DA as a fluff-bunny army, painted nice and pretty, but once they were painted I started liking them more than my competitive army! How can I get these bench-warmers winning games again?

One Idea I had was bring back the Land Raider (Crusader), fill it with DWKs and the PFG Techmarine - Quickly approach the enemy line and coordinate a Belial bomb with 10 shooty-nators and charging DWKs. Mean while the PFG is giving 4+ covers 3" from the LR hull and the TLAC dreads are firing from a bolstered ruin (3+ cover).

Is this a good strategy or too gimmicky?

Any thoughts would help.

Yeah, there's some good Deathwing tips in the DA tactical thread, but to be more specific, with Deathwing you need to be making sure every squad is doing what it's meant to do. In a combined list, this means roughly the following:

The Deathwing should be used together to hit a weak point of the enemy line and take it apart in a turn or two. Pick a flank to minimise incoming firepower.

The Knights should be heading towards the biggest, baddest threat and smacking it to hell and back. Go for MCs, Heavy Tanks (Monoliths/Land Raiders/Spartans ect) that the rest of your army cannot handle. Putting them in a Crusader is certainly valid- with a Deathwing Vehicle upgrade, an AP2 weapon has only a 1/36 chance to cause an explosion now, so it's both exceptionally durable and dangerous.

The rest of your on-board assets should be looking to target the things that can hurt the Deathwing- they are the fire support and covering units in essence. If the enemy has a squad or tank with a lot of AP2, or something that can spam enough wounds to take down the Deathwing, focus on those so the termies can get their job done. Don't be afraid to play aggressively with these units either; ultimately, losing a Tactical Squad is better than losing a Deathwing squad, especially now everything is scoring.

Hope that helps.

Thanks that was helpful.

I, for one, will not be taking the conservative approach to the PFG FAQ and WILL try it out in a LR!

I would bring a whirlwind. That thing blasts nids like it's not even funny. It's also very handy as a tau adl beat stick.

Another thing I'd consider trying is the speeders to support your bikes. The shroud and support squadrons are useful

Another cool trick is to mount up veterans and a techmarine in harness into a drop pod. Laden with special and combi weapons you can make a meteorite of doom capable of wiping out even a wave serpent in a single concentrated blast (9 melta shots oooo yea)

Deathwing is tricky. I think a Landraider Crusader will help immensely, as it will make it much easier to assault with termies ( Specifically DW Knights if you have em, if not, get them asap). Support is IMHO very important. Whenever I run Deathwing I will try to DW assault turn one VERY aggressively as it tends to put most players on edge, and it gives them too many targets to focus shooting on. Dreadnoughts/tanks (WHIRLWINDS EVERY GAME!) will support your Terminators very well, and i like to think it's fluffy. Ravenwing bikers come standard with teleport homers too, in case a turn two deepstrike is more your style. I'm drunk so I don't think this is going to help much, but godspeed brother!

I still support the dual LRC method to playing DW. Use them to punch where you need to, protect them with PFG, and use them to screen any shooty terminators you have.

Landraiders are the obvious go to now that DW can have them as OS scoring units that can re-roll the improved damage table. Add knights with a librarian with invisibility too for some added fun.
