With the advent of 7th edition, my planned idea for an Ironclad drop pod list is looking much more viable! Here are two versions I'm thinking of trying, the first with only one Knight, the second with two Knights.

-----------------------------------------

Option 1: With 5 Ironclads that can drop turn 1, a Stalker for AA, and a Knight:

Master of the Forge: 90

Tac Squad: melta, combimelta, DP 125
Tac Squad: melta, combimelta, DP 125

Assault Squad: 2 flamers, DP 95
Assault Squad: 2 flamers, DP 95

Ironclad: DP 170
Ironclad: DP 170
Ironclad: DP 170

Ironclad: Heavy Flamer, DP 180
Ironclad: Heavy Flamer, DP 180
Stalker: 75

Knight with battle cannon: 375

Total: 1850

-----------------------------------------

Option 2: With 3 Ironclads that can drop turn 1, 2 Stalkers for AA, and 2 Knights:

Librarian: 90

Tac Squad: melta, combimelta, DP 125
Tac Squad: melta, combimelta, DP 125

Ironclad: DP 170
Ironclad: DP 170
Ironclad: DP 170

Stalker: 75
Stalker: 75
Thunderfire Cannon: 100

Knight with battle cannon: 375
Knight with battle cannon: 375

Total: 1850

-----------------------------------------

Thoughts on which list might be better and why? The second has a librarian, but if I'm bringing that little to the psychic phase, would it be better just to skip it altogether?

Originally, I had planned these as null deployment lists, and I would still consider that if going second. But I think I could try deploying some games, particularly with the second list.

I guess I scared folks off with the "knight" in the title

Seems like an interesting approach, either way - target saturation of AV13 targets.

The second one strikes me as better, as you aren't paying the 200 point tax on the two assault squads, you have better AA (which is fairly important in this list, as your core AV13 units can't deal with flyers at all), and in any case 1 knight is more durable than 2 ironclads.

I would probably go ahead and keep the master of the forge in the second list, and park him next to a knight to repair. The librarian doesn't really have anything to do otherwise (unless you drop him in with the tac squads, which I guess might be useful).

You don't have enough troops in the 2nd list for Objective Secured and don't have enough firepower to eliminate high OS armies.. I like the first and feel it is much better. Though I'd drop one Ironclad and the Stalker for two Stormtalons for AA, I feel it will be much more effective long term.

IF you can take a third tactical squad and you know the rules from the Damnos book formation Orbital Strike Force (or something close enough that it dosn't care) - ALL drop pods come down turn 1 and have crusader and fear 1st/2nd turn.

As a drop pod player (ultramarines) - this is awesomesauce.

My only concern with these lists are the fact you've only got 2 (albeit heavily armoured) units which will be up for a fair bit of being shot at.

Zagman, do you still like the first list even though the assault squads are fast attack, not objective secured?

It would cost me another 50 points or so to turn them into tactical squads, and I don't have anywhere to get those points that I can figure out.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys! Parking the Master of the Forge next to the Knight is also a really good idea that I had not thought of

I would go with the 2 knight list, I run 1 with my Blood Angels he takes alot of shots leaving the rest of my army to capture objective/kill his anti-walker units. having 2 you can make him pick one or the other and your iron clads will sweep everything else up. What are you going to do with liby in the second list though

Crap, too much time looking over BA lists lol.

I fee both are just too light on Objective Secured. I'd much rather see them become Tacticals.

I think the first list, if you drop two Ironclads and the Stalker, picked up two Storm Talons, and spend the rest on another solid Objective Secured Unit would do much better on the table. I feel five Ironclads and a Knight or three Ironclads and two knights is just too stressful on the list at this points level, at 2k it wouldn't be a problem as you snag one more OS unit.

I guess it depends on how competitive you want the list, as it stands neither really have the firepower to table an opponent and solid Objective Secured lists will be able to beat it. If its just for local fun, go with your gut.

Not sure if this is much better, but it takes the 2 Knight variant of the list and specializes some things a bit more... the Ironclads for infantry removal, the knights for vehicle detail, and the troops with a couple more bodies... not sure if it's gonna be great though... still very light on troops.

My thinking is, the Ironclads can put immediate pressure on their Objective Secured units, or blobs in cover/terrain, while the Knights advance on any heavy vehicles. That will force them to dedicate their forces to saving their troops or stopping the dual Knights from advancing... it may be enough pressure to be effective, but I haven't played with or against 2 Knights before so I'm not sure...

MotF
Tactical Squad (10) - pod, meltagun
Tactical Squad (7) - pod, meltagun
3x Ironclad - pod, heavy flamer x2
2x Stalker
2x Knight Errant

Automatically Appended Next Post:
You could always drop a Knight for a more mobile additional Objective Secured unit and HQ, something like this?

Chapter Master - bike, artificer armor, storm shield, power fist
Bike Squad (5) - grav x2, combi-grav
Tactical Squad (10) - pod, meltagun
Tactical Squad (10) - pod, plasma, combi-plasma
3x Ironclad - pod, heavy flamer x2
Stormraven - multimelta, assault cannons
Knight Errant

(or, you can downgrade to a Captain and the plasma tac squad to melta to get an extra MM attack bike in there which might be good)

I'd add Heavy Flamers to all Ironclads. In my 4 Clad list it's been very helpful.

I like the first list. It doesn't say anywhere, but can I assume thisis a salamanders army?

I'd imagine it would be Iron Hands, seeing as all the Dreadnoughts with IWND is much more effective than twin-linking 2 assault squads' flamers.
