Starting historical gaming and really keen on building a late war British force and sticking loosely to history so I can take them to fight in Ireland, Russia ect depending on when I get round to buying some enemyy mini's to tempt my friends.
Question: does anyone know of any good (cheap preferably because this is a side-project) makers? Thanks guys!

I'll 2nd Peter Pig. Their style isn't for everyone but the casting is superb and the amount of cleanup work required is minimal, which is more than can be said for allot of Battlefront figures.

4th for Peter Pig.
I've got loads of their stuff for a variety of ranges, they're basically my go-to for any 15mm.

Quality is excellent, and very consistent.

Thanks guys for the consistent peter pig comments will pick up enough for a small game.
A hundred questions...does anyone know the best rule set for 15mm great war?? I want something that let's me roll western front but can go right up to the early 1920's....something that will allow me to use a wiiide range of artillery+vehicle+aircraft (not all at the same time but enough for variation in historical campaigns, scenario's and battles)
Alongside this something quick and maybe good for novices to pick up and learn and be fun as I will be buying all the factions and have many random drop in players.

I like FoW for VN and WWII and am excited to see what they have for WWI when it comes out. 10,243rd for PP. I don't have their WWI minis, but their moderns and Samurai are superb. I would expect their WWI to be every bit as good in quality. Note that they are a bit smaller than BF miniatures if you want to mix them when they come out. IDK, BF minis have been slipping in quality over the last couple years so I prefer to use PP when available. The recent BF sculpts are giants. They could probably headbutt a Space Sarine in the nuts where regular 15mm guys would be luck to get a kneecap. And I can build a Perry or Warlord plastic in the time it takes to clean one infantryman off. BF vehicles, on the other hand, I consider to be the top of the line, bar none. I also prefer their rules in general to most other available systems.

I'm going to be doing some WWI stuff later this year for the centenary and I'll be using Through the mud and the blood. It's designed for 28mm but can be easily adapted for 15 by making some distance adjustments (halving all distance measurements should be about right, although the rules themselves note that the ground scale they use is actually closer to 15mm than 28mm, so you could perhaps just halve distances for movement etc and leave shooting distances unchanged). Also note that like most TooFatLardies games it's primarily scenario-driven and so there are no army lists or points values available. You can create your own scenarios or there is a supplement with a good selection available. If you buy the rules you can also email them to get a further free supplement featuring scenarios for interwar conflicts in Germany and Ireland as well as the famous 'British Civil War' alt-history.

I'm from the future. The future of space

Peter Pig's stuff is well cast and the sculpts are really characterful, even at 15mm.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

With so many great options for 15mm WW1 already available I feel ashamed for ever being excited for FOW's WW1 range

Actually battlefront minis are generally about the same or slightly cheaper than Peter Pig (40+ for £14 vs 8 for £2.90) and the quality of the sculpts is IMO pretty much comparable, except BF definitely win out in in facial details. For the WW2 ranges at least.

Agreed. I don't know where this idea that Peter Pig minis are cheap comes from, at £2.90 per pack of 8 they work out at 36p per miniature. A platoon of about 40 figures for battlefront miniatures can be bought for about £12-13 online, which works out cheaper than peter pig.

That's because they have twice the area to work with.

I'll be checking out both ranges when BF produce some WWI French.

Ironically, the French figures produced for FoW's Blitzkrieg book were quite possibly the largest infantry that Battlefront ever produced (and widely criticized, partly a result). Their Tirailleurs (sp?), i.e. Desert French, were apparently more reasonably sized, though. And usable as mainland French troops (just claim that they'd ditched their coats before the fighting started).

Given the former, I find it somewhat amusing that you would comment on the size in one sentence, and you mention that you're waiting for their WWI French in the next.

@ Eumerin: It was a BF pumpkinhead reference.

I'm actually wondering if I could get away with using early WWII French miniatures since FiB (who make the best 15mm infantry IMO) make them.

Of course I'd have to play the FiB 'jump through hoop to actually get their stuff' game.

FIB's stuff is lovely, however is suffers for having large gaps in it's infantry ranges.

You may well be able to get away with using FIB early French for WW1 as the uniform in 1940 was virtually identical to the one in 1918, albeit in Khaki instead of Blue.

The only problem is that the model's will be armed with the shorter MAS-36 and Berthier carbines as opposed to the much longer Berthier rilfe used in WW1. At 15mm this might not be an issue.

And once you get away from the infantry, much of the rest of the French equipment is probably obtainable without too much trouble. Lots of WW1 era guns were used in WW2, and many of those reused guns were of French design. So they're already available. If you want French tanks, then the FT-17 made its first FoW appearence in the book Blitzkrieg.
