I was looking around on the GW website and it seems someone borrowed your chapter.

We actually have a local player here that has been playing "Grey Death" legion for years (He even has a custom T-shirt made with the name and symbols), but his army looks different. The idea of the legion is cool no matter how many people use the name. I think the Grey Death minis in this topic are the best painted that I have ever seen. Alas, no matter how original any of us are with our ideas.... someone somewhere has probably already done or will do something just like it. Even GW has stolen most of their ideas from other sources, but it is still cool in my book

Great work on your minis grey_death. They are very crisp and neatly painted (something I'm not good at)

There are a couple of Grey Death armies out there. It's not an original idea for any of us though ^_^. We all stole it from the same place. BattleTech! I was an avid Btech player back in the day before I found out about warhammer. Then one day I finally got some warhammer stuff and sat down to paint a marine. I wanted to play space wolves, but my friend didn't have the correct paints, so I picked out some colors that were sort of close that he had on hand and went to work coming up with my own scheme. And since they were all grey a friend chimed in "Grey Death Legion!!" And thus they were born.

And not to toot my own horn but yes, I believe I've got the best looking group out there ^_-. Thanks for the compliment!

Yeah, 2 weeks in the wilderness with 5 other guys and no SoB anywhere in sight. Not even Slaanesh Demons to peep on because now they got clothes. So why should I shave?!

No just kidding I like the beard it comes out pretty good. It is a beard isn't it?

Yep, it's a beard. More like thick stubble.

Once again I am in admiration of your loving and confident, yet calm and steady approach to the project. You clearly have a vision, you've set to execute step by step.

The sniper looks very characterful already. I would've wanted to see entries like this in the dakka challenge. This figure really has an aura of the infantry in him. I think the beard looks like a beard now, and would require a little careful glazing with skin colours to shave back to a stubble. I like the look, just an observation.

Thanks a ton for the kind words man. My idea on the scouts is that they are already grizzled veterans from the 3rd Armageddon War. The scouts are freshly recruited from those that fought by the Grey Deaths side in the hives and ash wastes to replace the heavy losses from that campaign. I wanted to give the impression that these aren't some bright eyed fresh faced teens, but that they are men among men. That's one of the thoughts behind the unshaven face.

I'll try going for the stubble on a future piece with your suggestion.

The funny part is this model isn't even in my army list. I just wanted to paint him so bad that I had to break the mold a bit.

Came up with another quick swatch idea:

I think this is more in line with my original intentions. I think it got mixed up in my mind when I started thinking of possibly going with a digital pattern. Unfortunately digital patterns have MANY more color variations than what I've gone with here and am willing to do for a 25mm model x.x...

I actually like the far left version on the 3 sample swatch. It really catches the eye, but I'm not sure if it would overpower the model and become the focus or not. That scout looks outstanding!

I decided to roll with it and see where I went. And I'm happy to say I'm rather pleased with the results. I went back in with a darker color (black + bestial brown) and it added that little bit of extra that I was looking for, and gave me a chance to break up the pattern a bit more. I also went back with a dark wash to help shade the folds more. This was something I should have done before going in and camo'ing but it works just as well now.

Thoughts?

Did some more brain storming for a chapter badge. Again, I just let my mind wander and whatever came up I drew it. These aren't all necessarily appropriate for the Grey Death Legion, I just don't limit where my mind roams in moments like these ^_^.

I'm not sure if I see any that fit the bill yet. But I'll keep workin on them!

Turtle!

Behold, we are the Turtle Marines! We advance across the field in a slow, methodical manner, cowering in our Power Armored shells as return fire patters harmlessly off our hulls!

But seriously, the two I really like are the outstretched hand, and the four claw marks that kind of do this: illi

The added color to you camo is definitely awesome! I think it beats all of the alternatives that you tested, hands down. I like the darker look of it and it fits the model alot better.

I really like it, it looks like modern camo. I've heard that the digital camo really breaks up the shape of a person and makes it harder to focus on them. Besides, shouldn't space marine scouts of 38,000 years in the future be using camo a little more advanced than blotches?

I like the 8th symbol in the top row, and the 2nd symbol in the last row. They all seem to fit in with the chapter scheme (any fluff by the way???).

I like the reaper with the sythe. Maybe define the head a bit more (empty cloak, skull, etc) and make the bottom look ragged. Giving it a ghostly reaper look.

I'll let you know if I steal the top hat idea, I'll credit you as "Insignia by Grey_Death" Actually, it may work well for a vampire count army too.. hmm. new models coming soon... I need to win the lottery.......

Thanks man ^_^. And ease of painting was a big factor in the design of it.

As to ANY of the other ideas on this blog for insignia (past the one I selected of course!), anyone should feel free to use them ^_^. There are some good ones in there that I didn't think fit the army as well as the reaper/death symbol. I hope you guys enjoyed the watching the creative process that went into this!

Now, to go about finishing the model x.x...

Ok I know I know...I'm lazy and I haven't updated this bad boy in a long while. But I got a 360 and it's stolen all of my time.

But tonight I decided to put an idea together that I've had stirring in my head for a while now, even before I got the 360. A Gears of War inspired Close Combat Bolter. It's just a prototype, but it could be something I use in the future for the Grey Death Legion, or a one off squad some day down the road. I thought I would share the results so far with you all ^_^

Thoughts, comments, and suggestions are very much welcome ^_^.
