Yak,

I didn't know about the PDF version of the rule. That actually makes a huge difference, since it give us some insight into the develpers' minds.

Actually that was less about bragging, and more about anecdotal evidence of the improvement to storm shields for the guy who had the lightbulb go off on assigning rending hits to TH/SS Termies- as well as MC/Power Weapon hits, etc.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

I dug out the early leaked PDF. The text at the time was:

DIAGRAMMATIC EXAMPLE: A Space Marine squad is
made of five models: two Space Marines armed with
bolters, one carrying a meltagun, one carrying a missile
launcher and one Veteran Sargeant (which is armed
with a bolt pistol and a power fist and also has a
different profile from the rest of the squad). They are
hit by a volley from a nearby enemy squad and suffer
eleven wounds (nine wounds from weapons with low
AP and two from weapons that pierce their power
armour (a plasma gun, for example).

This amounts to two wounds per model, plus a single
spare wound. The controlling player allocates the two
plasma gun wounds and the spare wound on a normal
Space Marine armed with a bolter (he’s trying to
minimise the damage…) and two of the other wounds
on each of the other models. He then proceeds to take
saves for each model individually.

You may wonder why they didn't stick with this example, but either way the *principle* is still the same in both versions, in that players are 'allowed' to minimize damage through wound allocation.

This isn't something that is going to be FAQ'd out of the game, it is how the game works.

Glad this has all been cleared up, and while i completely agree that when considering shooting this provides a distinct advantage to complex units and fairly so, I feel that in the event of 3 wounds per model in a unit, and all 3/3 rending or AP2/1 shots all manage to hit the same marine would be highly unlikely in the heat of battle.

So although this is over as far as RAW is concerned, i still feel from a fluff PoV its a little unfair to the attacking unit.

And if each killing shot just magically hit a different target, every time.... also seems a bit unfair.

Thats why its neither... if you have a hundred guys, then yeah, its more likely 3 different guys eat it from an unsave-able wound... if you have three, its much more likely, the three big guns targetted the same guy.
