Where can I find these 5 or 6 lists that percolate to the top each time in tourneys? I am trying to learn list building and haven't been having much luck. All I seem to find are lists of armies people want to try out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is a thread in Dakka Discussions currently on this topic.

As to the person that was talking about flanking, thats because most units are organized in skirmish order which decreases the effectivness of the unit, if a unit is surrounded you still get the bonus if you defeat them, they can't run away as they cannot complete their fall back move and are destroyed.

If flanked while behind a wall they no longer get the cover save from being behind said wall.

Its still there just not as accurate as in real life.

Basic Concept:

HAVE A PLAN.

Yeah, plans don't always work out, but if you start the game with a mishmash of units and randomly put them onto the battlefield with no plan from the get go, you're in trouble.

Also, Veteran Player does NOT equal Teacher! Not everyone can actually teach, and just because someone is a Vet at playing games doesn't mean they have the skill to effectively pass that knowledge onto you.

When the Vet approaches the table, he know what his units can do, has an army list that is planned out and designed to work well together, and he has a plan on how to use it to achieve his goals. When confronted with his opponent he then tailors the plan on the fly to deal with that specific enemy as best as his army can.

Throwing pre-made army lists at someone and telling them that's what they should play is ineffective. They need to know what to do with it to make it win.

QFT Somnicide has a great point here. I would like to further add that its all about keeping an eye on the prize. Its usually very hard to table most opponents. As Redbeard points out, playing to tie is also an option and sometimes you do have to prepare for that scenario.

Comparing tournament records is another form of e-peen measuring.

Wait, are you talking about 40k or Fantasy, shooting or close-combat, and are you arguing that flanking does exist?

"I went into a hobby-shop to play m'self a game,
The 'ouse Guru 'e up an' sez "The Guard is weak and lame!"
The Chaos gits around the shelves they laughed and snickered in my face,
I outs into the street again an' grabbed my figure-case."
Oh it's "Angels this" an' "Space-wolves that", and "Guardsmen, go away!";
But it's "Thank you for the ordnance" when the Guard begins to play,
O it's "LOOK AT ALL THE ORDNANCE!" when the Guard begins to play.."

Im not sure if this is really necessary but I believe worth a mention to promote further understanding & idea development.

There are basically three 'levels' of planning / war fighting

Strategic: The high level plan of how to achieve your desired goals. Defined by the rules of engagement (game rules). And what the actual political goal is (objective's or KP's).

Operational: Actual specifics of how you will achieve your goals with the forces you have available. Which basically comes down to how to best maximize the combined strengths of all available assets and apply them in a decisive fashion against a point in your enemies line.

Tactical: how your individual units fight. Do they stand off and blast away or get in close and disrupt your opponents ability to manoeuvre / bring firepower to bare.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

War fighting is not a science, nor is it purely a mathematical task. If its not maths or science what is it I here you ask? In english the only other term we have is art. Hence Operational Art - the trade of generalship.

There's quite clearly some professionally trained people around here (FWIW I am not one of them!), its relatively easy to identify them. Read and absorb, apply - win!

Hope this rants been somewhat usefull!

Umm.. Being able to wing-it does kinda have its advantages.

One being it messes up your oppenent when he tries to second guess you. Is it a bluff etc etc

Also if you look like your going to be winging it the opponent wont be able to plan against what he expects you to do & may play more reserveadly.

It could be I are a noob & find it easier to think along such lines. Its a happy existance.
