I've also found that a standard 1/8" x 1/16" magnet fits perfectly in the holes for the base peg. Drill them out a little, put a magnet on the tip of the base rod and in the bottom of the hole and they will stay on the base very securely.

Has anyone else tried this game out?

My friend and I played a game with cutouts last night, the Terran starter vs the Dindrenzi starter. It was a good time. My Dindrenzi ships were taking a beating in the first several turns, but my battleship was able to even up the field a bunch after eliminating the Razorthorn BS. I lost, but the game became very close by the end. We messed up some of the rules, but generally the game is very easy to internalize, and we didn't have to look too much up. Torp vs PD tactics will be interesting to learn in time.

I'd be interested in other people's impressions of the game.

I've played a few intro games and the system seems pretty solid. The mechanism for combat is simple but there is a lot of variety built into the different fleets to keep it interesting. Games move quickly and the system as a whole seems very balanced. Firestorm seems like a system that's easy to learn but difficult to master. Tactics and maneuver definitely make a big difference. Brute force rushes without thought will get you killed fast (if your opponent is not asleep at the wheel). Patience and planning are rewarded. The alternating activation of squadrons (as opposed to the Ugo-Igo turns of other games) makes the game less of a snooze fest as you don't have long to wait before you get to do something.

I've got the Terran starter set built and just picked up the Dindrenzi starter. A word about the models: they are multi-part resin and white metal affairs and not for the beginner modeler. Some flash is present on the resin pieces and a bit of sanding and shaping may be required to get things to fit square. As with all resin models you must dry fit everything before gluing to ensure a good fit. The Dindrenzi battleship in particular is a tricky model to build with a gap modeled between the hull halves, a feature sure to catch even veteran modelers off guard. I highly suggest the reader head over to the Spartan Games forums and read up on the ship building guides BEFORE they set the first drop of glue on this model.
