3rd Ed? Go back further. That thing first showed up during 2nd Ed.
It's one of the oldest models in the range now - not as old as the Avatar and the Phoenix Lords - but getting there.
The thing is the Avatar and Phoenix Lords still look really good considering how old they are. The Chaos Dread really needs an update. The FW Chaos dreads are awesome, but obviously pretty legion specific, a more generic plastic version would be awesome!

It's been three years, the Chaos Marine book that is current was released in summer 2007. However, I agree, there won't be a new Codex any time soon.
I'm both excited about the possibility of new chaos models, yet a bit let down that a CSM codex isn't in the near future. It would definitely be enough of a catalyst to get me back in the hobby and buy a new army again. Nothing else really gets me excited enough to want to start an army currently, aside from Daemons, but that book has so little depth in terms of options it doesn't do it for me game-wise. Personally, all a new CSM codex would really need is god-specific daemons, a little more options for Daemons Princes, get rid of Chaos Icons and give them back marks and maybe, maybe, just maybe throw cultists in the list (one can hope ).

I'm hoping CSM is getting new models or even a surprise codex update. Any sort of chaos update usually gets rock star treatment and frankly a "good" chaos update might restore people's faith in GW

That was true for the models in 2007 with lots of new plastic sets, but the Codex on the other hand, while providing for some fun game play and competitive with other books, is a bit bland and lacks a lot of character of the previous Chaos Marine Codex. Then there's the roll for the Possessed squad's mutation ability after deployment. That's neither colorful fun or very tactically useful.

@BrassScorpion
I agree as well. The codex and sub par rules associated with it are a negative. There is too numerous negative stuff in book to count. Being unable to get fearless/cult chosen or termies in the current book is a major negative for me.
Hopefully GW are aware of the large fan backing of Chaos and the potential of sales a chaos update could generate. Then again, in the Grim Darkness of 5th Edition, there are only Space Marines.

For their current codex yes, go back a codex and that is not true at all.

Unfortunately I was still trapped in fantasy only when the 3rd edition codex was out...I've browsed through it but I've only played the 4th edition one. Absolutely shredded my friend with two squads of slaanesh termies led by a khorne lord with daemon weapon and a few other toys. My only complaint with this book is the cookie-cutter 2-lash prince lists. I don't take any because I don't want to be "that guy"

Lash is not even an issue anymore. Everyone complained about it so much, but since the meta has switched to tanks and vehicles lash has been severely reduced in its effectiveness. The reason that list was so popular was because it was easy to use while still effective. Lash does still work, but vehicles need to be opened first.

Recommend if your having problems with raptors to cut them off their metal bases and give them new bases. The models themselves are great.
Having said that plastics are just the way forward. So bring them on.
New CSM codex would be great.
