Week 37, Games 16 & 17.
We returned this weekend to an old favourite, Warhammer Quest.
Over the past few years we have started off many, quest campaigns but not got very far with any of them. As we have played pretty much every variation of the level one dungeons we decided to go straight in at level 2, rolling up level 2 characters.
This may in hinesight been a mistake, although we had the stats for level 2, we had no extra equipment and no magic items.
I fancied being a half-ogre and so set my stats at half way between the ogre and the barbarian. When I say ogre though I don't mean the rules for the ogre that were officially released and had been playtested and therefore were, at least mildly, balanced. No, I used the rules for an Ogre I found on the internet.
We got I think four rooms into the dungeon before two of us died. The other two decided that descretion was the better part of valour, and legged it.
I rejigged my Ogre a bit, we poured some more absinthe and waya we went again. This time we did make it the Objective Room, but faced with 3 mummies, 2 wraithes and 6 chaos hounds it all went pear shaped.
My character, with his dieing breath, offered the wizard 810 gold to heal him. With 6 wounds he turned heel and followed the other two remaining heroes into the dungeon. It was a nerve racking few rolls but with 1 wound left Toby, the half-ogre, fell gasping into the sunlight.
I enjoy Quest, it's a different feel to the competative ethos of wargaming. The trouble is the game feels slightly outdated now. We did talk about altering it, but whether any of us will ever be arsed is another matter.
This is Leggy. No, I don't know what he's doing. Note: none of the models on the board are actrually what they are supposed to be.
Finch contemplates his move, while in the foreground the green faerie louches.

I think that is my "Gosh, absinthe is strong" face. Next time, we drink it bohemian style. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, you neglected to mention that the 810 gold you paid Professor Wizzbang was to heal you and LEAVE THE ELF RANGER TO DIE.

We drank it french style saturday. Bohemian style is the one where you soak the sugarcube in some absinthe then set it alight.

Bohemian style is bs. It was made up to sell the stuff to blokes on stag-does. Why burn all the alcohol away before you drink it?

Well, you won't catch me doing it. Unless something has been done for at least 70 years, I'm not going to risk it.

By my count you've got 17 games posted, 5 more to post, and only a month left. 30 games in 4 weeks? I'm sure it can be done!

Your first post is dated 16/07/2010. By my count that gives you a month and 3 days, unless your official "start date" is different to the first post.

Week 49 Games 18, 19, 20, 21 & 22.
I think I'm now in week 49, anyway it's close enough. To be honest I've also forgot how many games I've played since my last post, but Leggy says it's five so that's good enough for me.
I know one of my battles was against my brother. We played the first battle of our dark age campaign. This was the longest game I've ever played, but it was only carried out in lunch hours and I went on holiday in the middle of it.
Unlike most of my battles this year, I got a solid win. The scenario was as thus:
The norse lord of the middle region of what is now Shropshire died, leaving his Saxon wife, Aelfled the Fair and his Viking brother to fight over his lands.
Aelfled took a small contingent of saxons to hold Bridgnorth, but her brother-in-law moved south with a larger force. Aelfled had to hold the area until her father could relave her with more troops moving up from Ludlow.
I deployed in the village with 250pts of troops including Aelfled. The vikings came on the table with thier whole force, 500 points. From turn three onwards it was rolled to see if Aethelstan, father of Aelfled arrived with the rest of the troops, another 500pts.
I started with some civilians as part of my force and sent them across the Severn to see to the norse arches. They did this admirably and also drew the unit of elite viking across with them.
The rest of my points were spent on archers, which harried the other flank and a unit of lowly Ceorls. I managed to get these into a flank charge against the viking bondi and this was enough to break them but unfortunatly Edward realised his viking hirdmen where usuless on the other side of the table and brought them back just in time to get a flank charge in return. This broke my big unit with Aelfled in.
Luckily next turn she rallied and Aethlestan arived, meaning ti was all over for the northmen. I finished with out loosing a unit and having no enemy left on the table. Why can't more battles be like that.
I imagine the other four battles must have been part of the warhammer campaign. On the face of it I haven't been doing too well here, not manging to win any of the battles, but despite this I am quite pleased with my performance. Every battle has been getting closer, so much so that the last one was, I think 50 points shy of being a draw, in a 2500pt battle, I don't think that's too bad going.
Most of my improvement has been down to army selection, I would say. I've got it now so I don't really have any weak links. I've really thought about how my army will work and picked it to a grand theme. I've also gone through the runes and thought about what will be usefull rather that just what seems cool. As a result I've got a far more agressive army that is starting to fight batles far more on my own terms.
I've still got a way to go, after each battle there are probably half a dozen things that I realise I shouldn't have done, but if I can remember these and improve o them in the future I should start to get somehwere.
The real test will be a week on Saturday when we are holding a four person mini tournament, that should be interesting.

Hi all,
very sorry but
TONIGHT'S MEETING HAS BEEN CANCELLED.
The first meeting will be in a fortnight on 20th July, same time and place.
I hope this hasn't mucked you all around too much, we've just learnt we can't have the venue and it's a bit late to find somewhere else for this week.
Hope to see you in a fortnight,
Tom
