OK, keep up the good work! RL can get in the way, but I like your strategy of painting instead when you can't get to the game. It is also a great policy to not buy anymore models until your current models are painted. This, in the end, is really the only way a gamer gets anything finished - else the % of unpainted models just goes up and up!

Here we go, the long awaited...
Game 6. Week 16?
40k
IG (me) & Eldar (J) Vs Ad Mech Guard (Leggy)
So it was, one grey and blowy October (or possibly November) day Leggy and J made their way to mine (and when I say made thier way to mine I mean I picked them up, the one not having a car and the other a license) both hung over for our first warm up game of 40k in preparation for the tournanment in February.
We rolled for a mission and got 'Hold on to the beacon in the middle of the table' or some such mission, with J and I taking the parts of the Space Marines.
Here Mr Legg can be seen eyeing up the Eldar/Guard team up in the middle.
It started well. Jordan cleared out some of the Ad Mech who had entrenched themselves in, well, a trench.
After that it all got a bit bloody. We lost the power to win after the last of our troops died but we returned the favour and it ended in a stalemate, with pretty much only tank lefts on the table.
So was it a good game? It was actually. As battles go it was pretty unspectacular, the only thing of note being that it took a massive 6+ hours (this being for 2000 points). But some nachos were eaten and beer was drunk (though not by me as I had to take them home again) and I think it is safe to say a good time was had by all.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, and for Leggy, here is a picture of me looking like a tailor.

I am still pitifully behind but I have had two games since my last write up. I am not going to gove the details as, basically, I can't remember them. Don't worry though the next battle I fight will be written up in full.
Instead I leave you with a picture of the first model painted up for the tournament I am entering in January.

Great thread this year. Hope you did well & get in a couple more before New Year's. I ended up with 70 games this year and could've have 72 but both my final opponents were picked up by their mothers just as we started to play; dangers of playing with kids.

Yes, My Legg is right, it's time for another update. I think this thread was started about 6 months ago so I should be in roughly game 28 know. Am I? No. But I am on game 13.
Game 7 was against Mr Legg and was a warm up for the just passed Caledonian Uprsing tourney at Maelstrom games. I lost.
The only previous tournament I have entered was the 1st Platinum Devil in Canterbury. I came, if I remember correctly, 8th out of 8.
This tournament had 80 entrant so by my reckoning I had a 9 out of 10 chance of not finishing bottom. Hmmm. What I hadn't taken into account was the ridiculously high standard of talent that would be here. I should have guessed as it was a fund rasier for the Scottish ETC team. I also saw some English shirts and someone left an Irish ETC die on my table.
What I'm basically saying is don't expect too much.
So how did I do?
Well....
(All the below games as well as the above one, were played with my squat/IG&DH army.)
Game 8.
40k Vs Lee (Eldar).
Lee was a member of the Brighton Warlords and a very good player. On the plus point I found out what not too do when playign Eldar. I received 1 point out of a possible 20.
Game 9.
40k Vs Paul Kirk (Daemons).
I had high hopes for this second game. The tourney was run on a swiss system and so I reasoned that as I had received a tabling so would my opponant have. I was as it turns out correct, but where as mine was deserved his seems to have been unlucky. I received another tabling but I did enjoy this game as Paul was an affable fellow and very sportsman like.
Game 10.
40k Vs Glen Hale (Orks)
By this, the third game in the tourament I had sunk down to Table 37. But where was table 37? There appeared to be only 36 tables in the room. Oh, no there was a little side room that contained the bottom 4 tables. Thus was dubbed by myself and my fellow Bridgnorth gamer, Jordan, the slow room.
Actually when it came to playing the slow room had a more chilled atmosphere, lots of chatting and asking people what the rules were.
I did do better in this game and the difference in victory points was only 10 points in my opponants favour. Unfortunatly though the game wasn't decided on Victory Points but on Kill Points. I lost 4-3, but did get 5 Tournament points.
Well, that was the end of the first day. A slightly dissapointing start, but I was confident going into the second day. I had now found my level and on the plus point more points than Jordan. So to beat him all I had to do was keep it up.
The second day started on a slightly humiliating note. The tables had been reversed so I had to go and pick my stuff up from what was now table 1, where all the good players were congrigated and carry all the way down to the bottom of the class, passing every tabel on the way down to table 39. The plus point was that Jordan was on table 40.
Game 11.
40k Vs Craig Green (Marines).
Craig played Marines. I forget what variety, but they were wearing black.
This was probably the most exciting game of the tournament for me. It was the scenario where there are two objectives. At the end of the fifth turn Craid held one objective and so did I, but his squad had taken more than 25% casualties. He took the Ld test, if he failed this and the game ended I would get a a win. He passed it. Well a draw would be better than nothing. But the game didn't end.
By the end of the sixth turn he still held his objective but had now contested mine. On the plus point both squads had been taken down by 25%. His took a Ld test for the squad on his objective, and passed. Oh well if his other squad failed and the game ended I would still draw. He passed.
By the end of the 7th turn he held both objectives and had pretty much wiped my army from the tabel.
I lost.
Jordan also lost this game so we were pretty sure that game 5 would be the battle for the wooden spoon and yes...
Game 12.
40k Vs Jordan Grigg (Eldar).
We were paired up on table 40, well at least it wasn't too far to move my stuff.
It started off well. The scenario was the one where you have 5 objectives. By turn four J only had a three man squad of troops left. I still had most of mine. It had come down to rest on two objectives. Two others were effectivly out of play having no troops from either side near them, the fifth was contested and looked like staying that way.
And what did that sneeky little bugger do? Moved his remaining three troops onto one counter and contesting the other in the last turn.
I lost.
Game 13
40k Vs Jon Last (IG)
Surely I thought Jon must also be pretty bad to be on the bottom table. Somehow he was the best player I had played on day two. I teamed my Medusa up with my Punisher on one flank and though I would pop the tanks open with one and finish the troops off inside with the other. Sure enough Jon sent a Chimera my way. Unfortunatly he parked it in cover and made every cover save up until the last turn when I destroyed the tank but failed to get any of the occupants.
His Lemon Russes dealt pretty effectly with the rest of my army and again, by the end I had little troops on the table the end score? 9-2 on kill points.
I lost.
And so to the humiliating bit. I had come here hoping not to win the wooden spoon (win? well you know...) and now, come game 6 i had been thrashed on the bottom table. I hung my head with shame as a giant lolly pop was held up and the award for the suckiest player was given to... Jordan Grigg! What?! How could this be? Painting points! All those night spent sitting up and squinting at little models, the upset and neglected wife, it was all worth, I had beaten Jordan by 3 points.
I didn't loose!

"Soft" scores my backside. It took two weeks of sleep deprivation to get my Dark Eldar finshed. It'd be easier getting into the S.A.S!
But anyway, thanks for a great weekend of wargaming Tim. Everyone I spoke to really enjoyed it. Even "Wollypop" winner Jordan.

In an atempt to try and regain some lost ground I have begun a warhammer campaign. This will be my first foray into 8th edition, but I do like the look of the rules, I must say. I am playing dwarfs and will be the soul bastion of good on our, as yet unnamed, realm, the other players taking, Deamons, Chaos Warriors and Undead.
We set the campaign up last night, here we are doing so:
(I told them to look suave and dignified like the men on the front of the diplomacy box, this was the best they could manage.)
We are using the diplomacy rules for the campaign turns and fighting the ensuing battles using Warhammer and a naval system, maybe Trafalgar, maybe Unchartered Seas, maybe Man O' War, none of us have played any naval games before and so are not sure which will work best.
After three campaign turns the first clashes were lined up, I have only one battle to fight this turn against Jordan and his undead.
I shall of course post a write up of all the games here, but for those of you who are interested the proper campaign forum can be found here:

Week 32, Game 14.
Warhammer, 1000 points.
Vampire Counts (Jordan) Vs Dwarfs (Myself)
This was both my first game of 8th Edition and the first game of the campaign so I really wanted to do well. It felt good to have my dwarfs back on the table, unfortunatly they didn't last there very long. They say one of the first maxims of war is 'know thy enemy'. With this in mind I thought, 'what are undead like?'. Never having played them before I came to the conclusion that they are slow moving but very good in combat. With this in mind I built an army around shooting, with 2 units of Thunderers and 1 of Quallerers. I also included an organ gun, a unit of Miners and a Thane.
The scenario we rolled up was Mountain Pass which should have suited my army quite well. It didn't. Jordan succsessfully deployed his units behind a zombie screen. I had the first turn but had nothing to do. On my second turn my miners came on. Jordan's slow moving army was already far to far forward for me to attack from behind so I brought them on my left flank, which is where his armoured skeletal dudes were heading.
Unfortunatly his 'slow' army turned out to be damned fast and just skirted round my miners, leaving them usuless for most of the battle. His zombie screen held up just long enough to get his gouls and (crypt guard?) into combat, the few casualties I had manged to inflict on the units behind had long since risen back from the dead.
From there it was all over really. His army managed to wipe mine out unit by unit from the side. I nearly had a slight comeback in the last turn when he overran into my Thunderers allowing my miners to charge him in the flank. Although I won that combat my Thane challanged his general and was auto killed by some thing. His big vampirey-flappy thing also charged my flank and I lost that combat and fled. Leaving, at the end of turn six only one unit of 10 thunderers still coherant.
Oh well, I know what not to do next time.
I shall be posting a prose version of this report very soon here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/347358.page on the campaign thread. (This was the battle for Carrion Peak.)
The final melee, where my miners flanked the grave guard but were then flanked into turn by his thing that isn't a bloodthirster. (If I only all these models were painted and I had some kind of sky back ground this picture would look awesome.)

Just gotta quote some of the most laughter-inducting lines once more for my own amusement
Thus was dubbed by myself and my fellow Bridgnorth gamer, Jordan, the slow room.

Why do you only ever raise that quarter of your table when you're using Dwarfs TP. It's never like that in 40k, or when you use Ogres. If I was suspicious, I'd think you were trying to gain some kind of advantage....

Entertaining and enjoyable! Sounds like you're getting in 1 or 2 games per month. If you want your goal of 52 in 52 weeks it is time to turn up the heat, though. Maybe play some evening games - even 500 pt battles to get your tally up.
Either way, if you're having fun, GO WITH IT! I guess a Dakkite needs time to model and paint, too, right?

Week 34, Game 15.
Warhammer 1500 Vampire Counts (Jordan) Vs Wood Elves (Leggy) Vs Dwarfs (Myself)
This was only my second game of 8th edition and I do feel like I'm starting to get into it now. Generally I always let myself down on army construction. While this element was far from perfect this battle, it was a lot better. My main failing here was having one plan and not allowing for it not working.
Leggy and myself had previosuly agreed to a non agression pact until Jordan's general was dead. It being better for both of us campaign wise if Jordan lost this battle.
I tooled my genral up with this in mind, specifically to kill Jordan's general. With lots of runes including the rune of challaaneg and the rune of grudging.
Otherwise I bowed to the fact that both Leggy and Jordan know more than I do about Warhammer (despite the fact that Jordan alsways claims he doesn't know what he is doing as he wipes out your army). So I asked Leggy what would be good against Jordan and Jordan what would be good against Leggy.
The egenral consensus was that hard-arse fighting troops would be good and so would artillary with Rune of Burning. So that was what I took. 25 Hammerers, 25 Longbeards, a few quarrelers, 2 cannon and 1 organ gun.
We played the Battle Royale secanrio, what with there being three of us an' all. Unfortunatly I lost the dice roll and had to set up first in the middle of the table. Not knowing where the others woudl deploy I was forced to build a defensive ring to try and protect my flanks.
As it happens after deployment it didn't take me long to move into a proper battle line, with J on my left and Leggy on my right. As agreed Leggy and I set about Jordan, who unsurprisingly didn't last long. As soon as he general died it was everyman for himself.
Leggy brought his archers round to fire upon my troops but accidentally got in the charge range of my hammerers, that was those units tied up for the rest of the game.
Jordan's general had not been deployed anywhere near my genral, a fact I had not allowed for when I bought several hundred points worth of runes specifially to kill him with, so I nominated his other character for my rune of grudging. It didn't do any good, his character (a necromancer) sat at the back while I got bogged down in a unit of zombies he kept rasiing from the dead.
In the 5th or 6th turn, I forget now, Leggy charged his Treeman into the flank of my dwarf warriors who were already engaged with J's zombies.
At the begining of the 6th and final turn I was winning 3, 2, 1 I think. With Leggy 2nd and J third. The unusual situation of a three way combat led to Leggy winning and I failed my Ld test, dening myself a point for having my general survive the battle.
To cap this Leggy had the remnants of two units move onto two of the objectives and survive the firing phase. This left the score at 4, 1, 0, In Leggy's favour, with J bringing up the rear. An impressive turn around in one turn.
So what have I leant from this battle? Well I think I'm getting better. My army was stronger and I used it better. I do need to have more than 1 plan when setting up and I need to make sure I finish of almost dead units. Well there's always next time.

Not having any games on the horizon (we are waiting for one more battle to be fought in the campaign before we can move on and Leggy has gon on a 'Stag Weekend' rather than fight it) I decided to turn my hand to some other aspects of the hobby.
I am starting another campaign with my brother in dark Age Shropshire and wanted an unmounted Saxon Abbod to lead one of my forces. I couldn't find any on the net so decided to convert one.
I found a suitable model, a Foundy Celt I think, and set about making his tunic into a robe and adding a tabard. Then I realised he would an appropriate hair cut so decided to re scult the head. Then the head turned out too chubby so I needed to add a paunch. The required removing his sword and replacing it.
Anyway I ended up doing an almost complete resculpt and for a first serious try with the green stuff, I'm not too displeased.
I may have a go at some more models.
