Yeah, I really can't believe that Frankenstein isn't on the list. It tends to not have the same pure horror punch these days after so many sub-genres of horror have been pushed so far, but the ambience and feel of the movie is simply fantastic.

Aside from that, the only horror movies that really freaked me out as I was growing up was Poltergeist (fing clown) and Creepshow (fing thing in a box).

I have to say there are ALOT of good movie mentions in this thread (Seriously FITZZ your like the horror movie guru or something lol)

I agree on the first Nightmare on Elm Street, that movie was actually kindda spooky. Obviously that was long before they turned Freddy into a gag or something. Seriously WTF lol

Also I have Nosferatu on dvd, and it was surprisingly good for a silent film.

once you watch Nosferatu, watch some of the C movies as a cleanser and then watch William Dafoe and an excellent cast in Shadow of the Vampire. Its a version wherein Max Shrek was a real vampire they were filming. Its a slightly dark comedy but excellent.

One should also watch Young frankenstein.

-"Wait a minute.....who is that Frazz is talking to in the gallery? Hmmm something is going on here.....Oh.... it seems there is some dispute over video taping of some sort......Frazz is really upset now..........wait a minute......whats he go there.......is it? Can it be?....Frazz has just unleashed his hidden weiner dog from his mini bag, while quoting shakespeares "Let slip the dogs the war!!" GG

If you're in the UK a lot of B-movies are being dumped in Poundland at the moment, they are all part of something called "The Cayman Horror Collection".

So far for the princely sum of £1 each I have picked up...

Thing from Another World
Plan 9 from Outer Space
Fiend Without a Face
The Brain that Wouldn't Die
The Wasp Woman
Indestructible Man
House on Haunted Hill
The Terror
The Killer Shrews

and a few others I think. I've only seen Fiend Without a Face so far, and am saving Plan 9. The wife has never seen Thing from Another World so that's going on this weekend! Some of them are going to be obviously trash, I hear that "The Killer Shrews" is cheaper than Plan 9.

I believe so. I've seen most of it, as well as most of Misery, and all of Christine.

You've seen "most" of The Shining? "Most"?

If you didn't...

1) Pass out from sheer terror
2) Pass out from alcohol consumption
3) Experience catastrophic hardware/power failure

...then just stop now. Not finishing because you got bored or had to text somebody or just couldn't be arsed to pretty much invalidates whatever horror search for Mecca you're on.

I'm not like them, but I can pretend.

Well...it would depend on which version of The Shining he was watching...Kubrick's adaptation?..or the 1997 remake staring Rebeca DeMornay?
If it was the latter he could easily be forgiven for getting bored, texting someone...setting his television on fire.

I would like to thank you for jumping to conclusion and assuming that I stopped watching it because of a text or something.
I stopped because there was a bad snow storm, followed shortly by a power outage.

And it was the first one.

The Exorcist needs a spot if it doesn't have one yet. That's been one of the only horror movies that truly just terrified me and still does somewhat.

By the clack-smack cracking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes...

I agree on both. I loved Shadow of the Vampire. Its the main reason I cant hate John Malkovitch(sp?)

Completely agree,Shadow of the Vampire was simply fantastic and Young Frankenstein is my absolute favorite Mel Brooks offering, the banter between Gene Wilder and the young Med student in the beginning of the film is hysterical.

On a side note concerning "Werewolf films", I recently re-watched "Ginger Snaps",actually think I'm beginning to like this film.

God, Frazz. Thank you.
I was waiting for someone to mention these. I was going to list a few myself, but I didn't want to be redundant.
The first Child's Play isn't too bad. The first Friday the 13th is decent, too.

For God's sake, avoid Rosemary's Baby. That thing scared the HECK out of me as a little kid. I went back & watched it again when I was about 16 and hated it. It was just atrocious.

You might also consider some of what I call "Modern Classics," if you have the time. Essentially, these are (in my definition) movies that are 10 or less years old, but are good enough that they'll be counted in the "classics" as they age.
