The sad fact is, that GW seems to follow a method up until a point and then suddenly their well of creativity dries up and they go...(Or some subtle variation of this)
Designer 1 "So StormDeathShieldTank or Tyrannosaurus?"
Designer 2"Well the other variant was called Triceratops, The fluff is that it is named after an ancient terran reptile."
Designer 1"Really, so this is just of variant of the Triceratops so really we should call it another ancient terran reptile"
Designer 2"Sorry what was the original question?"
Designer 1"We need to get this to ours stores as soon as possible and start ripping off impressionable adolescents and mentally challenged adults"
Designer 2"Right thats settled, StormDeathShieldTank it is!"

People aren't thinking about the Space Wolf and the Blood Angel codexes (though the latter is by far the worst).

Yes, I agree.
Most of 40K was cobbled together from whatever bits of SF and fantasy the writers happened to be fond of at the time. You can hardly blame GW for not having thought out a coherent plan at the beginning.
The naming of Tau vehicles shows they got their act together later on.

I've noticed too that sometyranid names are taken from (relatively) religious titles.
Barbed Hierodule - Religiously protituted preistess of Ishtar
Hierophant Bio-titan - That's just a different word for priest
Lictor - Kind of a temple servant
Gargoyle - Those weird stone statues in churches that spit water
Harridan - Old witch (ok not that religious, but you know... Burn the witch!)

'Tank' itself came about a bit by accident as well. When it was being designed, the entire project was so secret that not even spme people working directly on it knew what it was about. They thought they were designing a water-carrier, hence the name. Once it was unveiled, though, the name stuck.
Are IG the only race with vehicles named after other GW creations? Macharius, Leman Russ, Malcador, etc...

Speaking of the ancient Greeks, that name sounds more like something the men would tremble at the mention of. Automatically Appended Next Post: Budgie wrote:Thats a cool story on the marines..
It seems that most armies have vehicle themes, but the Imperial Navy got lazy.... Marauder, Aquila, Thunderbolt, Lightning...
Marauder means to raid and/or pillage.
Thunderbolt and Lightning beyond their obvious sky connections were symbols used by the Emperor and his army in the early days.
Aquila means eagle and is another symbol of the Emperor.
Valkyrie is a Germanic female spirit that carries the dead off the field of battle to Valhalla.
Vendetta means vengeance.
Arvus? No idea, maybe the name of the person who discovered the STC like Land.

There is only 1 thing in Warhammer that doesn't really have a theme and thats the names of the Titans.
Imperial Titans:
Warhound (Dog)
Reaver (A different spelling of reeve which means to take away)
Warlord (A general)
Emporer (Obviously a ruler, but more likely a reference to the God Emperor since this is the largest and most powerful of the Titans)
Eldar Titans
Revenant (A spirit or ghost)
Orkz
Stompa (Obviously meaning to make it an Orky word)
Big Stompa (Same thing here)
Tyranids
Hierophant Bio Titan (More of them just giving it a scientific sounding name)
Basically with the Titans I think they name them so they fit the race. The Imperial Titans are all named after what they do, or their size. The Eldar Titan is named after a ghost or spirit since the Eldar strike like ghosts and dissapear. The Orkz to sound Orky. The Tyranids obviously to sound like a scientific name because of how we name our biological creatures.
It is interesting how you caught that with all the vehicles I never really thought of it until now. Thanks!

It specifically refers to robbing or plundering. The reivers of the Scottish borders were mounted raiders from both sides of the borders that preyed on everyone. I should think that they were the origin for the name reaver, there are also the reavers from the Firefly series who would share this origin.
A reeve was an official in early England, the most well known type was the Shire Reeve or Sheriff.

Its a ray. Like a sting ray, but in the sky. Thought I would highlight for your convenience. Took me a little bit to see it though.
Often times, rays (generally the larger species) can be witnessed jumping out of the water, and gliding above the water for short distances. This may be the basis for the "sky" in "skyray"
That raises an interesting question. Was the taus excelleraated evolution sparked off by them receiving transmissions of Stingray?
