Just for the sake of argument I'll point out that as annoying as bandwagon jumpers, pop culture whores and scenesters can be, the polar opposite is equally as annoying:

The "cool kids" that only listen to bands that no one else has heard of (and love to remind you of this fact), or who trash anything that other people like as being rubbish and/or beneath them.

It must be tiring being that "cool" and original and having to stay one step ahead all the time...

QFT you my friend have just summed up every music scene I have ever been part of =) I am not a fan of mainstream music and prolly never will be but I am not one of those idiots that thinks my taste in tunes is somehow more valid because its obscure.

Best example is when there is a music thread and every metal head takes turns naming the most obscure bands they can think off....

Damn I cant wait to the GW legal team codex comes out now there is a dex that will conquer all.

We know who the bad guys are. We just got done sending them to Congress--no one really knows why. How many people would be overjoyed to hear of a zombie apocalypse? How many would think that the world would make more sense in that case?

That's certainly an interesting theory. I suppose one could certainly feel that after you get to a certain point, it's easier just to watch the whole thing burn and then from the pile of ashes left over, start anew. I often fantasize about Fight Club in a similar vein; actually, as I think about it, I think it's more the idea of putting everyone on equal ground. A return to the state of nature. When the zombie apocalypse strikes, it's not about your car, your khakis, your job. Life isn't your 401k, or making sure you chose the right insurance policy. It's not coordinating your furniture color combination with the color of your walls. It's about survival, pure and simple. You eat, sleep, and fight/run. I think Hobbs might have been wrong. Perhaps we do, deep down, resent the constraints of society and desire to achieve some existence more natural and less laden with our current way of being. I like to say that right now it feels like we don't live, but we merely exist.

I feel like I'm already surrounded by zombies sometimes. Go to the grocery store, Wal-Mart, wherever, and look around at people. They just kind of shuffle around, like they're in a trance. Granted, that might just be the meth heads in my area, but that doesn't make it any less true.

I kind of feel a zombie myself as I shuffle around the grocery, only half-conscious of what I'm there to pick up. Maybe that's the correlation with internet-usage: compared to this abundance of information and analysis and intellectual stimulation (if only in a shallow sense) and--above all else--the choice, the control that one can exert through the browser or the blog or the forum, etc, over this world of information, compared to this, the routine tasks are revealed to be truly mindless and our interactions with the real, physical world seem ineffectual--like reaching out with dead hands, mindlessly grasping at what we don't even believe will nourish us.

I could agree with this, in a world over run by zombies all of the "illusions" concerning what is "important" are stripped away, the Wall street Business man,Giggling Celebrity and Corporate Lawyer become essentially useless, the massed accumulation of various "creature comfort" items becomes pointless and the veil of "social pleasantries" is basically ripped away.
The issue of surviving becomes the only relevant concern.

Of course, the issue for mankind is "under these circumstances, why bother?" Maybe this is why, in our imaginations, birds and squirrel and deer are safe from zombie predation. Survival is all they do and they cannot struggle with why.

Well Cannerus is a self-proclaimed bi-sexual (he enjoys making gay jokes), apparently he is also a sex god getting laid all the time and is probably the only Dakkaite to be a fan of Lady Gaga. He has thought about getting vasectomy too, believing

that the amount of sex that he receives will one day backfire on him by contaminating the gene pool of the world. So yeah calling him a strange dude might be an understatement (I'm not making any of this gak up either). That said he is a "cool"

guy and I do enjoy his strange sense of humor and personality, I'll admit I do miss him a little.

I can vouch for Milquedawg: none of it is made-up and he posted all that business without prompting right here in OT as a matter of public record. So yeah, I hope he comes back.

Anyhow: does anyone remember the pre-zombie monstre du jour?

Hmmm, pre-zombie?
I'd have to say vampires, even though they still enjoy a fair amount popularity with Twilight, have been the "peoples choice" monster for some considerable time.

Unless we're counting guys in hockey mask and such chopping up kids like Cannerus.

I mentioned on the TWD thread that it is very noticible how popular Zombies and Vampires have become lately. I walked into a chapters one day and their was dedicated displays for both Zombies and Vampires and it wasn't halloween or anything like that.
People just love dead people. It seems however girls like the vampires, for the terrible romantic storylines and dudes like the Zombies for the action/horror/comedy. Let's face it, zombies are funny.

Not read the whole thread, but Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later did a lot to bring back zombies back from the dead (I'm not going to apologise for that ). That got the ball rolling and then Shaun and the Dawn remake made sure it maintained momentum.

However, I think you can credit one guy for the whole gothic monster (i.e. vampires, werewolves, zombies, etc) craze that has run from the late 90s to the present - Joss Wheddon.

Aww, thanks for the love guys. And I describe myself as "extremely bi" for the record > My party days are mildly cooled down but only because the hopper runs deep (4 people on call, no more necessary atm and I could lose one or two without any harm).

On topic, going to have to agree with the Joss Whedon comment. Zombies are kind like jeans now; I don't think they'll ever completely disappear. Everyone loves something they can hate without regret.

Not to burst your homophobic bubble but the far majority of pedophiles are heterosexual (close to 65+%).

I'd be more worried about the straight guy with a wife driving that truck...
