LOS blocking is essential. 4+ save just means you throw more dice at a problem, which a lot of the high firepower armies have to spare.
Not to mention the fact that being able to use infiltrators to full effect requires getting them _out of line of sight_. Looking at the tables posted in this thread, there are very, very few terrain pieces that would allow for infiltration within 18". So that is another advantage lack of los blocking provides shooting armies.
As for the poster who brought the real world into this... there is a reason Pickett's Charge and the Battle of the Somme have gone down in history as Bad Ideas. I have no wish to recreate those situations in my games.

This looks like a good place to make a plug for the humble Soup Can. This is one of the coolest, near ready-made terrain pieces. a single Soup Can can give cover to a Trygon at good range, and, with a models-eye view, even completely conceal it at short range, if viewed directly. One. Singular. Soup Can.
A Soup Can really recomends itself for tournament terrain. It is cheap, and all you need to do to make it look great is throw on a flat top, some added reinforcements, and some paint. Adding rivets is optional, but a good touch. As such, if a TO really wanted to, he could turn out Soup Can Storage Containers by the dozen in a fairly short amount of time, and they look good.
Soup Cans can readily be combined to make more complex terrain pieces. A row of three spaced about 1/2" apart will block the majority of shooting past them, and are about 12"x4". A good player might be able to shoot at a rhino hiding behind them, but the rhino would likely get a 3+ save due to the oblique shot.
The Soup Can is pretty much the Axiom of Tournament BLOS terrain.

My club picked up a ton of these (also tuna and sweetcorn - one of our guys is a teacher so he brought a bunch of those industrial-sized school dinner ones down) and they're excellent. They provide really solid terrain pieces with real height for minimal cost (whatever it takes to undercoat and spray them really!). Just make sure to wash them thoroughly first as they stink to high heaven!

Just don't purchase Wolfgang Puck's soups for terrain, they'd be almost as expensive as Forgeworld. Look at that mug, he knows that he's bending you over at the checkout. Ridiculously expensive soup...
