And I say your version is taking movement away from a model, which is cheating.
Take two identical oblong models (XX and ZZ). One is facing forward, the other is facing to the right:
X ZZ
X
Turn one they both move 6" straight up (as you're looking at the screen). Only at the end of the turn, pivot model ZZ pivots 90 degrees back to the right. Run this iteration 5 or 6 times and watch XX pull away as ZZ loses an inch or so of movement every turn.

No movement is being taken away.
Imagine your model is on a giant piece of paper. Measure 6" away from the edge of your model. Draw a line on the paper there. That line is as far as your base can go. You can be rotated in any direction that you want, but that line is 6" from your starting edge, and that's the maximum distance you can travel.
It won't matter if your model is facing one way or another way, you'll still move 6".

I think that this interpretation and use of base or vehicle rotation to gain movement is the very definition of cheese. anyone who relies on rotating their raider or landraider to gain extra inches is a cheese hound and should be flogged, shot and then flogged again.

Blaktoof - states infantry can move in any direction. So there are rules covering not needing to turn to face.

The rule book explicitly states that a vehicle can pivot any number of times on its center point. This rotation is going to change the displacement of the vehicle, causing gains and losses of distance. This is not cheating. Its called geometry.

I chose option A.
I always just measure from centre of base to centre of base anyway, this makes pivoting irrelevent.
If you really want to spend your time spinning models around to gain a few extra millimetres, feel free, go ahead, whatever.... I know who'll be enjoying their game more
