There are two kinds of people in the world.

Those who like WoT, and those who don't.

If you like epics, then the wheel of time is great. If you don't, then you'll hate it. The jumping back and forwards between viewpoints can be irritating, sometimes you just want him to stick with one storyline. I'd second (or third?) the Black Company novels, and for something light hearted, Glen Cook's Garret P.I. series is quite entertaining.
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman is a classic, and Name of the Wind and Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss are recent books i've really enjoyed.

I love epics, you don't get much bigger than the Saga of Pliocene Exile/Intervention/Galactic Milieu story arc by Julian May (amazing books, read them all!). I just didn't like all the things WoT 'borrowed' and wedged together or, as I read it, a fairly poor writing style.

American Gods and Anansi Boys are pretty awesome as well.
