The republican party shifted so far to the right during the post 9/11 years that a modern day Reagan would be completely unelectable because Reagan's policies are far too liberal for today's political landscape. The left wing's policies have not changed, but left wingers have become even more obnoxious douchebags whom seem to enjoy irritating moderates/independents or infuriating right wingers rather than attempting to do something productive.

We still have the same groups of people out to kill us for the same old reasons + a few more new post 9/11 reasons. The only difference now is security is far more alert and better funded making the likelihood of attempted attacks far less than they were pre 9/11 at an extreme cost in money. The downside is the stated goal of Al Qaeda is to slowly bleed us of money until we suffer an economic collapse similar to the Soviet Union in 1991 resulting in the end of American hegemony. The net result is Al Qaeda meets their strategic goals every day without causing a single terrorist attack.

The only thing that has changed since 9/11 is America, and sometimes no matter how much things change things remain the same. Most Americans are as ignorant today as they were on 9/11 as to who is attacking us, and why they hate us. Furthermore the same groups of people are usually willfully ignorant of America's attention span and commitment to long drawn out wars. That means our politicians are accountable to the ignorant, and our military under the control of the politicians. I am haunted by the obvious.

If ignorant both of your enemy and yourself, you are certain to be in peril.

No its not actually, but you're probably too young to know what pre-2001 was like.

On 9/11 I was 25 years old, in the navy, and married with 2 kids. I remember the 90s including but not limited to: Hilarycare, the GOP shutting down the government, Monica and her stained dress, Al Qaeda attacking the USS Cole, Olkahoma city, and the 2000 Bush/Gore recount fiasco. When the GOP attempted to shut down the government it backfired and blew up in their face, and the same can be said of Clinton's impeachment hearings which just made an ass out of both sides. We've gone from conspiracy theories around Vince Foster to 9/11 being an inside job or Obama birthers saying he was born in Kenya. Things were far less partisan back in the 90's than they are now. The best example is the 2000 recount, imagine if the same events were to happen in next years election or the 2008 election. Can you honestly make the case that America has become less partisan since 9/11?

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

America has been very partisan for years, but it does seem as though the extremists on edges of the political spectrum are getting worse...
Bush and Obama certainly haven't helped matters.

There's been a lot of political hatred in America for a long time though. Now may be worse than the 90s, but is it worse than ever before? Or at least the worst its been since the Civil War?

This thread is certainly making it look bad. /shrug

Things were a lot more partisan in the 60's and 70's than they were in the 80's and 90's. The civil rights movement + Vietnam created a hyper partisan atmosphere much like what we have today. The least partisan time over the last 50 years were the 24 years between Nixon and GW bush. It is possible to get along, we just decide not to especially if we are in the middle of an unpopular war.
