Tidy up of base coat



Highlighting of water, boat and background. Added in some details such as the tower flag but decided the rigging would be best left out (as it would probably be too busy)



Tidy up of that, the black lining is all in black ink as black paint doesn't flow well enough..I now see the pic is annoyingly out of focus...



Here it is attached to it's proud owner, who is as yet unfinished. I think it's turned out well. The command group is nearly done now and I'll embark on the banner next....

I'm pleased with how they have turned out and really glad this unit is nearly done! I finished basing the command group today so I am down to the banners. Hope to be able to make a start on them soon but think it's unlikely to get finished before I go away for a few weeks.

Finally found some time to work on this unit..

I started my banner..



Plotting out the areas, basecoat is Iyanden Darksun and Fortress Grey..





basecoating complete..



I painted the yellow with watered down Sunburst Yellow in several layers to get a rippled feel, watered down white was applied in the same way onto the grey. The central design has been pretty much completed too.



Tidied up the black dividing lines and added the motto which is actually the real one, Virtue and Industry.



Added the anchor logos to break up the sparse areas, in the manner of this type of standard.

That's it pretty much complete, I'll do so shots of it in the unit soon! Hope you likee, check out my 40k Apoc battle too in the BatRep forum if you swing that way too!

I really like the free hand on the banner. I have dabbled with making paper(?) banners before too, and the ripples were always the hardest thing to pull off. But here, they look 'triffic.

That freehand is brilliant.

Thanks! Yes it is thickish paper, I've never really got the ripples to work before either.

I'll probably post up some pics of the completed unit tomorrow/day after, I've re shot the other unit a bit too (King's men) as I've added a sub pennant thing to their banner and managed to get good lighting for once..

This the (finally) complete unit. It feels like ages since I started these guys..



I'm now not sure if the banner is too big..it's exactly the same size as the recommended example banners Perry's include in the box..I have folded it in a bit more now and it does help..





Overall I'm pretty pleased with these guys..





This is probably my favorite pic, I've given the axe guy a bit of stubble and generally dirtied him (and others) up. I like how they've worked out..the image compression at this 600px image is blurring it a bit, it's a bit better in the gallery.

I've a similar group of shots for my other recently completed bowmen I'll stick them up soon,

Here's the reshoot of the King's Men unit with new pennant..not sure if I like it now....







The pennant reads: 'Dieu et mon droit' or God on my right. This is a real motto associated with the current monarchy which I expect is historically inaccurate but I didn't come up with anything else. I went for green as it's a different contrasting colour (like the yellow on the Bristolian unit above). I've limited the palette a lot with this army. I've seen a lot of historical armies that look a bit too random for my taste. All the differing colours make me think of jumble sales. I've allowed the various liveries to have primary colours but all the leggings and other bits are all in earth colours.





Little bugle pennant thingy, I like how this turned out.

This is where I'll be drawing the line with this army for a while. I've hit the wall with enthusiasm. I'm still looking forward to doing all my knights. I've got a box of Perry's Mounted Men at Arms ready to go and I'll pick up a unit of the Foot Men at Arms once they're released. I'll do a unit of each, I plan to do a nice king and redo my army standard. These guys will allow me to use lots of colour and cool heraldry and should contrast with the commoner foot I've now completed.

If I ever manage to actually field these guys I'll try to BatRep it.

I hope you've liked the blog, I'll be turning my attention back to 40k (boo hiss), tinkering with my Guard and restarting my Marines in earnest, follow the link in my sig if you want to check that out.

These historical minis are quite inspiring. You're doing them a lot of justice. Trumpet banner is awesome
