I think adding books would be a cool idea. It would give insight to their army's history which might be cool

Fifteen Hours, I thought, was a good book. I read it in one 4 hour sitting. I couldn't put it down. Lord of the Night is one of my favorites. It had some pretty cool characters in it.

Eisenhorn is definitely worth a read. If I knew where my copy of it was I'd reread again.

Anyone who enjoyed Eisenhorn should check out Ravenor. It's like Eisenhorn 2 with mostly new characters, but with the exact same awesome space-detective feel.

Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee.

Dunno. I thought Eisenhorn was a lot better- but that might be because I preferred his retinue. Bequin, Aemos, the Betancores and Fischig were far more likable and interesting, to me. I found myself hoping that pretty much everyone on Ravenor's team sans Patience and Nayle ended up dead by the time the trilogy ended.

Krieg! What a hole...

I really enjoyed the portayal of the Death Korps in Dead Men Walking, despite the book depressively depressive ambience, great book, imo.

Cadian Blood's anohter of my favorite, because it has zombies, and Kasrkins kick some behinds,

Redemption Corps left me a bit confused, I think I'll have to re-read it once I sleep properly.

Ravenor's problem is that it tries to be Eisenhorn in a Dark Heresy-esque sort of way. It isn't an Inquisitor novel so much as a 'acolyte' novel, and to me that didn't give it much depth or focus. And the actual plotline felt fairly repetitive (Imperial agent meeting his Chaos opposite - Ravenor vs Molotch.) and didn't really catch the interest the way Eisenhorn did. Of course Eisenhorn was alot more 'detective' style and each was fairly self contained rather than 'arc' stories, while Ravenor was clearly an 'arc' series... the potential was there and the characters are well written (Abnett trademark generally) but it just didn't really deliver on what it promised I felt. It's still got plenty of good bits to it, but it doesn't really reach the same level as the Eisenhorn series does. I'll be curious to see how Pariah turns out.

Redemption Corps is a fairly schizophrenic novel, I feel. There's the nugget of a good idea there, but its the characters and the presentation holding it back. We have a supposed Canoness who behaves more like a lunatic Radical Inquisitor which feels incredibly out of of character, and Mortensen has very little positive as a major character. We're told he's supposed to be some reverential figure of awe like Ciaphas Cain or Gaunt, but the story really fails to convey it. If anything, he feels like a grumpy jerk who's main quality is that he's coated in a layer of dead skin. Case in point his first clash with Krieg (felt rather pointless.) What is rather odd is that Redemption Corps feels quite similar to 'Atlas Infernal' (also by Sanders), but the latter feels more.. appropriate and polished than the former did. IMHO though, Legion of the Damned is his best work thus far.

I agree. Cadian Blood is an awesome book, I was so sad when my mom accidentally put my copy through the washing machine.

Eisenhorn's been mentioned enough, but I need to stress to anyone reading this, just in case you didn't get the message yet, read it. Really, just awesome.

I read the Iron Warriors Omnibus a while back, which was awesome. It does a good job of displaying the incomprehensible nature of chaos, as well as providing a good supliment to the Ultramarines Omnibus.

Titanicus is an excellent view into Titan combat. Also, by Dan Abnett, like Eisenhorn.

I may be biased, but I also very much enjoyed Rynn's Worl, by Steve Parker. The sense of brotherhood between the Crimson Fists is contagious, and the pacing is wonderful. The action never lets you go; even in more subtle, political moments, it's growling at you from behind the next page, like a chained watchdog.

From the Space Marine Battles, I've read all the novels but Architect of Fate, Gildar Rift, and Voldorius, and enjoyed most of them. Ranking them,

(1st spoiler tag is to condense-spoilers inside those are spoilers)
Spoiler:

1. As a BT player and a Grimaldus fan, as well as a fan of titans and Andrej being hilarious, Helsreach was my favorite
2. Battle of the Fang-Enjoyed the story greatly, especially as it takes place in M32 (I think) and continues the 1K Sons/Prospero Burns arc.
3. Wrath of Iron-Gave a good perspective on the Iron Hands, and I really liked the human/mechanicus characters.
4. Legion of the Damned-Loved the story, and that it managed to keep LotD mysterious. In addition
That thunderfire cannon is a badass

5. Kadillus-I started out disinterested, but ended up being a good book.
6. Rynn's World/Fall of Damnos-Tied for last, with Rynn's being slightly better. Rynn's never clicked for me, and I wasn't able to immerse myself in it, though it was enjoyable. I didn't like damnos because, TBH, I can't stand reading about Sicarius for anything much longer than a codex entry, and it was the first hinting at Newcrons (I like their units, but more soulless killing machines please).
Horus Heresy
Spoiler:

The HH books are also good for the most part. Note that I don't really remember the 1st three as I read them a long time ago, but they were enjoyable
Favorites: Flight of the Eisenstein, First Heretic (Read for custodes, not word bearers), Outcast Dead, Mechanicum (Bonus points since it has Sigismund appear), Know No Fear (These Ultramarines are badasses, not like Ward's), and anything involving Garro-Reading/Hearing about him pimp slap traitors around is awesome, and he's my favorite BL character.
Least Favorite: Legion-I never really got into the Alpha Legion

All of the HH short stories from the books out so far are worth the read IMO. The primarchs was all-around good, especially the Alpha Legion story. Seriously, it's ridiculously awesome, and this is from someone who isn't a fan of Alpha Legion.
From Tales of Heresy, I especially liked blood games and after de'shea (spelling?) and the Last Church (if it's in this book). I won't say anything about last church, wouldn't want to give spoilers.
From Age of Darkness, I liked the Forgotten Sons, Savage Weapons, and a personal favorite BL short story with the Iron Within

Outside those series, I have to recommend Ultramarines Series, Gaunt's Ghosts, and Titanicus.

Lastly, the Emperor's Gift. Read it. Now-The inquisition is coming for you if you don't. This is one of, if not the best, BL books I've read. Now why are you still on dakka and not reading the book :p

Just got priests of mars yesterday and loved it. My favorite part of the book

Spoiler:
The Reclusiarch taking on an Avatar by himself, and after he dies, the Farseer realizing her course of action had reduced the chance of her desired future happening. It's good to see someone besides Magnus/a loyalist librarian suffer from pride and the false certainty of their course of action.

I'd advise against that. Given the level of artistic liberty commonly employed by their writers, I think it's best to keep studio material and licensed publications apart. According to Dan Abnett, that's the very reason the Black Library label was invented, after all.

The way it's done now, people can choose to buy or ignore a novel depending on whether they approve of the author's interpretation of the force or not. Just ask people on dakka on whether they'd like to have GW include one of Goto's books with their boxes and you know what I mean.

(for the record, I have nothing against Goto in particular - I just bring him up because the poor guy seems to be the one author that catches the most flak)
