I like the Alpha Legion, but I am a bit sick of how some of the fans (None in this thread so far) assume they're the only legion who could use smarts on the battlefield or the only legion that can get things done. Could the Alpha Legion have besieged Hyda Cordatus? No. Could the Alpha Legion have fought the First War for Armageddon? No.

They're uber-powerful super soldiers with a niche, just like every other one of the traitor legions.

Niche is a very good point, and they do all have 'em, even if it doesn't feel like that sometimes. Here's to more BL books (and FW HH books) to give more depth and flavour to that, since some of that important character seems to have washed away somewhere along the road from the original codex to now.

Run a whole lot of wfrp and other rpg's, play The Woods and Kill Team, gather and look mournfully at imperial guard knowing I'll never finish enough to use them on the tabletop

Well in fairness,
The Alpha legion probably wouldn't have besieged hydra cordatus, much more likely they corrupt the regiment taking over guard duties... Or delaying the arrival of the guard change for long enough for the mechanicus little pills to do their work and then waltz right in.

Same with Armageddon, wouldn't have hung around for the fight, just attack the agri worlds supplying it, or poison the water imports or something.

They have their niche so would go about those conflicts in their own way.

The Alpha Legion are the Tau of the Imperium I believe... Fighting with the chaos marines for the greater good of the Imperium! as mentioned in the HH though. I dont think it is to end humanity and therefore end the chaos gods... I think it is means to an end.. and that end is the return of the surviving primarchs and a final march on chaos! when at a pivotal point in the battle the Alphas turn up kicking ass for the Imperium again

though that might just be what I want to happen haha

it sure would be interesting
