So it’s been a while. I got so burnt out on the 40K universe, and modelling in general, that I just needed to stop for a while. I’m over my burnout now, hopefully, and back with a lot more spare time on my hands for a project I’ve been wanting to do for a while - a plague marine.

I was really inspired by the new Sons of Horus Legion Command as a mid point between loyalist power armour and modern spiky chaos marines. They’re a lot more eerie than cartoonish. I was also inspired by a Death Guard conversion in the August White Dwarf which used back-to-front space marine helmets.

The base model is a standard 40K loyalist tactical marine. The idea is that he’s a member of the Death Guard who is willingly serving Nurgle (hence the shoulder pad iconography) but hasn’t quite discovered the full extent of Papa Nugle’s gift. I think I’m done with modelling, but I’ll wait and see when the most recent parts have cured. Paint scheme wise, I’m picturing crisp light grey with brass trim. The corrupted parts will be brown/green/purple.

No ideas for a basing scheme as yet, except maybe something with water. Any feedback welcome.

I do quite like the idea of power armour with a mono eye, interested to see where this goes now.

Wow, it's been a while since I've even been on Dakka, let alone been doing any real amount hobby. Real life has been kicking me in the lately. I forgot I'd even posted that plague marine on here - I've done some painting, I'll get some photos for my next update.

To try and get back in the swing of things, I've started working on a Khornate marine from the Dark Vengeance set I picked up when I first started painting. Fun fact - I originally planned to build a Khornate army, before Slaanesh got in the way.

I'm really happy with how the axe is coming out. I'm hoping the blue stone in the centre will be a nice point of contrast for all the red.

The armour is still pretty rough at this stage. My next step will probably be to work up the intensity of the gold trim a bit, dirty it down with some washes and then keep picking out all the tiny details. One thing I'm really happy with is how neat the eyes are, given how long it's been since I picked up a brush.

As always, any and all feedback is appreciated.

A couple more WIP pictures of the Khornate marine. I'm getting happier with how the armour is coming along, particularly the gold trim.

I haven't had any basing ideas for him yet - any suggestions?

...

Dangit, I forgot to get some photos of that plague marine.

Slooooow progress on the armour.

I’m quite happy with the way the shin demon is looking. I tried to do a glowing effect on the marine’s eyes and the shin demon’s eyes. I’m not entirely satisfied with the outcome but OSL is a technique I’m still learning.

I’m also not really happy with the green sections on the cabling, they just look messy to me. I don’t know if I’ll try to fix them or just make the whole cable a solid colour.

As usual, feedback is appreciated.

More slow progress. First of all, a wild tyranid appears!

This guy is going to be the second character in the two character diorama I’m building, along with the chaos marine I’ve been working on.

The base is an MDF board. I’ve started planning out where things are going to go. The wiggly line in front of the tree is going to be a small gully, and the tree branch the tyranid will be standing on is going to be magnetised so you can take it out and look at the tyranid.

As usual, any and all feedback is appreciated.

Another small-ish update. I decided I wanted a dappled look on the tyranid and this is what I came up with.

Any feedback on the paint job is very welcome.

The board for the diorama is also coming along.

I built up most of it with offcuts of high density polystyrene, filled the gaps with all-purpose filler and topped it off with a PVA/sand mix. When the PVA dries I'll put some brown paint on it.

I've also got a sneak peak at the few next things I'll be working on.

Firstly, a ForgeWorld apothecary in Mark IV (I believe) armour. I have no idea which legion this guy should be from, I’d love any suggestions.

Secondly, an old metal chaos terminator who I pulled out of the bits box last night and instantly fell in love with. He’s going to be a Thousand Son. I’ve got a Thousand Sons head on bits order to model on as well.

Phew. Sorry for the unplanned absence (again!) I promise I've not fallen off the wagon again. My boyfriend and I are planning a move to a new city, so there's been a lot of travelling and time away from home. I have been getting some modelling in, but I haven't been able to get time to sit down and post.

Some more progress on the diorama base. I'm really happy with the way it's starting to look and with the tree in place it's pretty much how I imagined. The next step will be some more paint on the tree and the rocks, then covering the entire thing with heaps of greenery to make it feel like really dense jungle.

The chaos marine is pretty much done, aside from his backpack. I'm struggling a bit with the tyranid, mostly his gun. I can't get any of the details to stand out and the amount of paint on there is starting to get ridiculous. I'm kinda tempted to start again. We'll see.

In other news, I've started work on my Thousand Sons termie. I swapped out the mace arm for the staff from the chaos termie lord kit. I really like the mace as a weapon, but the shoulderpad it's attached to has the chaos undivided symbol on it, which didn't really suit. I've still got a few other metal termies to build, I'm sure it'll work for one of those. I'm happy with the way the Thousand Sons upgrade hat looks, even if I did cut myself in the process.
