UKIP is a danger to the UK. They think that closing the boarders and leaving the EU will suddenly solve everyone's problems. The EU and immigration is used as scare tactics to distract people from the tax cuts that the very wealthy people and big business get. Now don't get me wrong, we do need to have control how large the population gets so that there is not a strain on public services, but at the same time, we must not lose our heads over the hyperbolic rubbish politicians and tabloid news-papers put out about immigration and the EU.

...or tax cuts for wealthy people and big business.

I was under the impression that they wanted out of the EU but in as one of the trading partners - much like switzerland. The cut in the red tape and reduction in our contribution (we would still pay for inclusion in the trade partnership) would help get the economy going and moving away from some of our comittments (particularly thinking about carbon emissions) would give us a little breathing space in energy policy. Also being out of the union would allow us to negotiate trade agreements and tarifs with the Common Wealth nations which have booming economies and some of which like us.

We have been offered a referendum which, due to the coalition never occured, and without UKIP threatening to rob the Tories of a few seats at the next election we would probably never see again. As the tories are unlikely to clearly win the next election we probably will not get a say anyway.

Unfortunately we need the "fruitcakes" (not my words) to get us a democratic say in something very important.

Actually, I'd be more happy with an EU-style relationship with the Commonwealth than with Europe. I suspect that many Britons would probably feel the same, actually.

The commonwealth as a whole is still less valuable than Germany on their own. Oh and good luck imposing western standards on agriculture and industrial products from Kenya and India

How are you measuring that?

Let me guess: Spuriously? I'm not sure it was really worth necro-ing this thread to make that particular 'point', do you?

What are you basing that on? GDP? Commonwealth GDP totals out at about 10 trillion, EU is about 15 and the US is about 14 and a half.

Though really I only want the Old Commonwealth re-uniting or forming an EU-esque body, most of the rest of the Commonwealth aren't exactly up to snuff in pretty much everything. Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, maybe South Africa if they can get their heads out of their butts. That would be pretty cool.

Import markets for British goods.

Import markets for British goods. I "necrod" it because I work like a dog most of the time and i am too busy/tired to post in the OT forum of a toy soldiers game.
