A series of movies about the Horus Heresy could be awesome, but I doubt any director would really do the scale of the thing any justice.
The characters wouldn't be fleshed out enough, the Horus Heresy series works as books because there's so many of them and so much time to get to know the characters... I fear that a movie series would phone in most character development in favor of more screen time for explosions.
I also think that there are few actors that could convincingly convey the majesty of the Primarchs, and none that would really do justice to the Emperor or Horus.

^^^^yes i hace to admit I have seen this low budget sci-fi movie and it does seem that they ripped off 40k. I don't think a 40k film should be a live action movie, but completely cgi. This way the emphasis can be on action, massive space battles, not 30 minutes scenes were the High Lord of Terra, or the Eldar talk about their feelings in order to get an emotional connection. I have commented before that a movie involving Imperial Guard is the best way to create characters that the audience can relate to.

It is also a somewhat low budget movie but look up the Halo 4: Forward onto Dawn. It has a good starting point, following the recruits that will make the grunt foot soldiers during training, with cameos of the newly created Spartans.
