I mean what the hell would Marneus Calgar and his group of like 30 marines and a vehicle or 2 really get out of fighting over some bombed out city against Castellan Creed and his legion of tanks and valkyries? Same goes for fantasy to me, I mean on the scale that you fight why would the empire bust out 1 or 2 steam tanks? IIRC there are only like 9 of them ever made but I commonly see lists use 1-2, surely the threat of 40 chaos warriors isn't enough to bust out 2 of these plus the emperor himself... thats about it for my rant.
Clearly all of
WHFB is a battle of representative markers. 40 CW is probably a few thousand. Because no one wants to paint and assemble a few thousand soldiers on a 50 foot game board. Stuff like heroes and Rares are probably a lot closer to 1:1. But if it makes you feel better you can say it is just a fraction of the overall battle. But there's nothing stopping you from having 50,000 point battles. Other than poverty.
Well "the journey" is a staple of Fantasy fiction. And while the "villagers" may never have visited the village next door, that is hardly the equivalent to what is leading your Fantasy Army.
Arguably, those would be more comparable to the Attila, Dschningis Khan, Columbus or Marco Polos of our world.
A lot of stupid stuff is a staple of fantasy. Like one giant evil boogieman who everyone is against. But it's nice to break molds. And Marco Polo/Columbus didn't live in a world where crossing the ocean (or next hill) MIGHT be full of dragons, it IS full of dragons. And trolls. And dark elves. You have to guess that 99% of all journeys undertaken end in death and ruin for all parties involved. It is not a profitable endeavor.
indeed even indigenous people moved around farther and faster than you seem to credit them.
Again, this isn't a, "man I'm bored, let's go to the big city." This world is full of ghosts and daemons and giants. Not fairy tales of them. If you're a 1stat normal person, you have zero chance if you run into a single goblin. This is an insanely scary world for people who don't have 4+ ward saves and are capable of punching hydras to death with their bare hands. You can look at any army book's map and the vast majority of territory is controlled by hostile species. There's literally a couple pockets where you're not going to instantly be killed if you travel to.
As for travel, I've seen values that roman armies could move anywhere from 15-25 miles a day with supply lines.
They took most of the scales off the new maps, but guestimating from the Lizardman one and
WoC one and
TK one, if you were to march from the top of the Marshes of Madness (after passing through O&G kingdoms with no problems...) it would still be like 500+ miles through desert to reach Khemri, the very first city. So that's about a month travelling through a desert filled with nothing but sand and undead to reach a city filled with undead. No one's going to do that. If they did, it would be novel-worthy mega campaign requiring a kingdom's resources and almost certainly resulting in a lot of dead campaigners.
